My -111 Pick for Chelsea vs. Everton

Go for over 2.5 goals in this game. David Moyes is thought of as a defensive coach, but Everton are looking much sharper in attack this season.

Chelsea Have Stuttered After Impressive Arsenal Performance

Chelsea’s confidence grew after a 1-1 draw with Arsenal last month. The Blues had to play more than half of that contest with 10 men following Moises Caicedo’s red card in the opening period. Yet they were probably the better team overall, despite that numerical disadvantage. Picking up a point against the Premier League leaders in such circumstances was a triumph for Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea then set about trying to build on that creditable result, starting with a trip to Leeds United last week. They failed. A flat, lethargic performance at Elland Road contributed to a 3-1 defeat by Chelsea’s relegation-threatened opponents. They were second best in all areas that night, as Maresca himself admitted in his various post-match interviews.

Chelsea were unable to return to winning ways last weekend too. A 0-0 draw with Bournemouth was not as bad an outcome as that loss to Leeds, but it was still a missed opportunity for the Blues. Bournemouth are out of form and Arsenal had lost to Aston Villa earlier in the day. Yet Chelsea were unable to capitalize by emerging victorious on the south coast.

That lack of consistency is likely to be the main factor that prevents Chelsea mounting a genuine tilt for the title. On their day, Maresca's side can go toe to toe with anyone in Europe. In the past few months alone they have beaten Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool and Barcelona. Yet Chelsea have dropped numerous points in matches they ought to be winning more often than not.

Perhaps this is not a surprise given Chelsea are the youngest team in the Premier League. It is still frustrating for their supporters, though, especially when you consider how much money the current ownership group has spent over the last few transfer windows.

David Moyes Showing His Coaching Acumen on Everton Return

The middle portion of the Premier League is remarkably congested right now. A few weeks ago, Bournemouth were flying high in the Champions League places. Now they are 13th. Everton have had the opposite trajectory. Fourteenth as recently as the start of December, they are now up to seventh in the standings.

For that they have back-to-back wins against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest to thank. Zoom out a little further and you will see that David Moyes’s men have won four of their last five top-flight encounters, a sequence which includes a 1-0 away victory over Manchester United in which the Toffees had to play with 10 men for 77 minutes.

Moyes has done a fine job since returning to the club for a second spell around 12 months ago. He inherited a team that was 16th in the division, just a few points above the relegation zone. By the end of the campaign, there were no worries about demotion at Goodison Park. Everton ultimately finished 13th, as close to third as to 18th in terms of points.

With a new ownership group in charge of the pursestrings, Everton spent more than $150m in the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Jack Grealish, Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Tyler Dibling, as well as making Carlos Alcaraz’s loan move from Flamengo permanent.

Everton have risen up the table quickly, but they could fall back down just as swiftly if a few results go against them. It is too early to call them European contenders, but it already looks like Everton will steer clear of the bottom three. That is testament to everyone involved with the club, but especially Moyes.

“I'm too old now to say we just want to avoid relegation, but I'm not daft enough to say Europe is possible. I don't think we are quite ready, but we will keep knocking at the door,” Moyes said last weekend.

Everton Will Give Chelsea Something to Think About Here

Chelsea head into this game on the back of a four-match winless streak, including a 2-1 loss to Atalanta in the Champions League in midweek. The Blues are struggling to strike the right balance right now. When they keep things tight at the back, they struggle to score enough goals. When they are consistently threatening in attack, they find it tough to keep a clean sheet.

Moyes mentioned the importance of defensive solidity after the 3-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest last time out. Everton have shut out their opponents in each of their last four wins. That includes 1-0 successes away to Bournemouth and Manchester United.

On this occasion, though, we reckon goals are on the cards. Moyes is often seen as a pragmatic manager, and that is probably true, but this Everton team is not short of attacking creativity. Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye are all fine players with the ball at their feet. Everton should find the back of the net here.

At the same time, Chelsea have the tools to cause Everton one or two problems in the final third. Go for over 2.5 goals when these two teams go at it at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
