Chelsea have one foot in the Conference League final after a 4-1 triumph over Djurgarden in the first leg of their last-four tie on Thursday. Enzo Maresca’s men eased to victory in Sweden, as a Nicolas Jackson brace and individual efforts from Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke made the difference. Chelsea will almost certainly complete the job in the return fixture next week.
They cannot afford to focus only on the Conference League, however. Chelsea have been strong favorites to win that tournament ever since they qualified for it. Anything other than a trophy-lift would be a major disappointment for the Blues given their financial advantages over their fellow competitors.
A piece of silverware should never be sniffed at, but the powers that be at Stamford Bridge would no doubt rather see Chelsea qualify for the Champions League. For that a top-five finish is required and, after Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 to Brentford in midweek, the Blues remain in fifth place.
There is not much margin for error, though. Forest are level on points with Chelsea, who are ahead on goal difference alone. Aston Villa are three points behind Maresca’s men and they can move level with them by beating Fulham in the early kick-off on Saturday. Chelsea still have plenty of work to do in the final weeks of the campaign.
They have at least improved their form for the run-in. Chelsea have now lost just one of their last eight top-flight outings. They have won back-to-back league games for only the second time since the turn of the year. Maresca’s style of play is still not to the liking of many supporters, but the results have gotten better of late.
Chelsea have a tough set of fixtures coming up, though, starting with Sunday’s showdown with league leaders Liverpool.

Liverpool have done it. With four games left to play, they have already won the Premier League title. There is no question at all about whether or not they deserve it. Liverpool have been the best team in the division by some distance. They are worthy champions.
It is hard to overstate the achievement from Arne Slot. When he was appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor last year, many Liverpool fans were underwhelmed. Xabi Alonso had been the first choice of the Anfield faithful, but he opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen. Slot had impressed in the Netherlands, but this would be his first job overseas.
And what a job he has done. It is not as if Slot was able to bring in four or five of his own players. Federico Chiesa arrived as a back-up forward, but we have barely seen the Italian. Slot has won the title at a canter with a squad that is not his own. Some managers frequently insist they need multiple transfer windows before they can be judged. Slot has shown them up.
Champions League qualification was the main objective before a ball had been kicked, but Liverpool have had that in the bag for months. It is true that they have benefitted from Manchester City and Arsenal’s decline, yet it would be churlish to withhold praise for that reason.
"[I am] incredibly proud, not only of the players but the people standing here, sport directors, my staff members, we should give them a big round of applause,” Slot said at Anfield after a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend secured the title. He has every right to be.

If Liverpool were still chasing the Premier League title, our prediction for this match might be different. As it is, Slot’s side have probably spent the last few days celebrating their triumph. Liverpool might not play with the same level of intensity at Stamford Bridge having already got over the line.
True, Chelsea were in action in Sweden on Thursday, but they are in good form right now and their handsome win against Djurgarden will have only increased the optimism within Maresca’s squad. Chelsea seem to be coming on strong as the finish line comes into view.
Of course, Liverpool have the quality to cause Chelsea problems on Sunday, even if they are not at their absolute sharpest. But consider the Blues’ excellent recent home record. They have won four and drawn one of their last five matches in front of their own supporters in the Premier League. That bodes well for the visit of the champions.
Chelsea will have less of the ball than normal in this one, but that might actually suit them. Liverpool have not been completely convincing defensively of late, and Chelsea have the players to give them something to think about. Back the Blues to come out on top in this match as they continue their march toward a top-five finish and the Champions League.
