Chelsea’s Progress Stalls as Defensive Frailty Rears Its Head

After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, as well as winning the Conference League and Club World Cup, Chelsea are hoping to be involved in the title conversation this term. The early signs suggest there is still considerable work for Enzo Maresca's team to do if they are to challenge right at the top of the division.

Chelsea made a decent start to the campaign, but they have now gone three games without a win in the top flight. They threw away a 2-1 lead against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, conceding a late equalizer to draw 2-2. Then came a 2-1 loss to Manchester United in which Robert Sanchez's early red card left the Blues in a difficult situation.

Another sending-off last Saturday changed the course of their game against Brighton & Hove Albion. This time it was Trevoh Chalobah who was given his marching orders for denying Brighton a goalscoring opportunity. He left the field when Chelsea were 1-0 up. By the time the final whistle sounded they were 3-1 down.

Perhaps fatigue is catching up with them. Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory meant they were still playing competitive soccer right up until the middle of July, nearly two months on from the end of the Premier League campaign. Their pre-season plans had to be altered and Chelsea may now be suffering for it.

The likeliest explanation, though, is that the Blues are being undone by errors of their own making. Without those red cards picked up by Sanchez and Chalobah, Chelsea would surely have done better against both Manchester United and Brighton. They shot themselves in the foot on both occasions.

A broader defensive frailty is counting against Maresca's men too. Chelsea have conceded seven goals in their last three matches. They rank only mid-table for expected goals against, which shows Chelsea are giving up more chances than the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City, the teams they will have to better if they want to win the title.

Liverpool Out to Get Back on Track After First Defeat of Season

Liverpool suffered their first setback of the Premier League season last weekend, and it was inflicted on them by a familiar foe. Crystal Palace began 2025/26 by beating the Reds in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. Last Saturday, they defeated the Premier League champions at Selhurst Park courtesy of a last-gasp winner from Eddie Nketiah.

Even Arne Slot admitted that Palace deserved to win. The hosts could have been three or four goals ahead at half-time such was their dominance in the opening 45 minutes. Liverpool got back into the game after the interval, yet overall it was a disappointing display from the title holders.

Liverpool have problems at the back too. Although they rank higher than Chelsea for expected goals against, Slot’s side have conceded more goals than Aston Villa and Newcastle United, both of whom are languishing in the bottom half of the table. Ibrahima Konate is struggling at center-back and, following their failure to sign Marc Guehi from Palace in the summer, Liverpool do not have a replacement waiting in the wings.

The Reds had won five league games in a row before their trip to Selhurst Park, but they rode their luck at times during that run. Liverpool scored late goals to beat Bournemouth, Newcastle, Arsenal and Burnley, but that is not something you can rely on forever. Last weekend it was Slot’s team who were undone by a strike in second-half stoppage time.

“If I want to look at it from a positive side we created quite a lot of chances against a Palace team that hardly ever concedes a chance,” Slot said afterwards. “If I look at it from a negative side we conceded far, far too many chances from the limited ball possession Palace had.”

Chelsea and Liverpool Could Deliver a Feast of Entertainment

Chelsea and Liverpool have both been involved in some entertaining encounters recently, and neutrals will hope they deliver a fun game on Saturday. There is certainly evidence to suggest they will.

First and foremost, neither team has looked convincing defensively in the first few weeks of the season. In addition to Konate’s struggles, Milos Kerkez has had a mixed time at left-back and Slot has tinkered with his options at right-back. Chelsea's defense and goalkeeper has long looked like the weakest part of their unit.

On the flip side, there is no shortage of attacking talent available to Maresca and Slot. Hugo Ekitike is available for Liverpool again after suspension, giving them another option up top. Liverpool rank second for goals scored so far, with Chelsea joint-fourth.

Finally, both managers will be going for the win. They will encourage their players to attack in search of all three points. As such, over 3.5 goals is the way to go when Chelsea host Liverpool in the late kick-off on Saturday.
