My +138 Pick for Crystal Palace vs. Manchester United

Go for a draw at half-time at Selhurst Park. It is hard to pick a winner between these two sides, and the first half will probably be particularly tight.

Manchester United Must Develop Greater Consistency

Before the November international break, Manchester United went five games unbeaten. After a patchy first year at the helm, it looked like Ruben Amorim had finally begun to get a tune out of his team. United fans were suddenly starting to look towards the Champions League qualification spots.

The top four remains within reach and it would be wrong to go overboard after one defeat, but the manner of United’s 1-0 loss to Everton on Monday was hugely disappointing. For 77 minutes, they were facing a team with 10 men after Idrissa Gueye’s early red card. Yet still United could not score.

It is worth noting, too, that Amorim’s charges went behind when Everton were a player down. From there, David Moyes’s men defended with diligence and discipline, and United were not cute enough to break them down.

No one in a red shirt left Old Trafford that night with his head held high, yet Amorim’s bizarre stubbornness was the biggest problem of all. Even against 10 men, the United boss refused to alter his system. This resulted in them having three center-backs often up against no one, allowing Everton to avoid being overloaded in their defensive third.

The Premier League is tight right now. United are down in 10th place, but they trail fourth-placed Aston Villa by only three points. They have clearly improved in many respects from last term, not least in attacking areas. Yet until they can become more consistent, it is difficult to see United climbing into the Champions League places.

The upcoming fixture list looks reasonably kind. After Palace, United will face West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers. But after that come Aston Villa and Newcastle United. It is vital that United get a few points on the board over the next fortnight. If they do not, Amorim will be under pressure again.

This Is the Greatest Crystal Palace Team in the Club’s History

This is the best time ever to be a Crystal Palace supporter. The Eagles won their first major trophy in May, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final. They followed that up with success against Liverpool in the Community Shield in August. Palace are also competing in Europe for the first time, and the bookies have them down as favorites to win the Conference League.

Palace are flying high in the Premier League too. A 2-0 defeat of Wolves last time out moved them up to fifth, fueling hopes of a top-four challenge. If results go their way this weekend, Palace could be in the Champions League places at the beginning of December. That would represent remarkable progress for a club associated with lower mid-table.

A shoutout to former sporting director Dougie Freedman, the man who identified the likes of Adam Wharton, Ebere Eze and Michael Olise, is due. But Palace's transformation is primarily down to Oliver Glasner, who has done a magnificent job at Selhurst Park. If reports are to be believed, the Austrian is admired by the hierarchies of both Liverpool and Manchester United.

Only Arsenal have lost fewer league games this season than Palace, who rank fourth for expected goals difference - a measure of chance quality both created and conceded. Their lofty position is no fluke. Palace have barely skipped a beat after losing Eze to Arsenal in the summer.

The one doubt concerns the squad size. Palace are not used to competing in Europe, so fatigue could be an issue as the campaign wears on, particularly as Glasner is not really one for rotation. For now, though, you will not hear too many grumbles from the Selhurst Park faithful.

Manchester United Will Not Have It Easy at Selhurst Park

Manchester United may have recently gone on a five-game unbeaten run, but they are currently without a win in three matches. No one would be too surprised if that sequence extended to four encounters this weekend.

Crystal Palace are without defeat by domestic opposition on home turf since February. They are a tough nut to crack in front of their own supporters, so United should expect to be in for a tough 90 minutes here.

One factor in the Red Devils’s favor is greater preparation time. United were last in action on Monday, whereas Palace locked horns with Strasbourg in the Conference League on Thursday. Given this is a midday kick-off local time, Glasner’s team have not had long to prepare for Sunday's showdown with the 20-time English champions.

Palace are nothing if not resolute, though, and United may find things difficult in the first half in particular. Only Manchester City and Arsenal have been ahead at the interval more often than Palace, who have found themselves behind after 45 minutes on a joint-low two occasions.

United have also been strong in the opening period, especially compared to after the break. Tiredness may be an issue for Palace, especially given Glasner's aforementioned preference for relying on a small core of players.

With all that in mind, go for a draw at half-time in south London.
