Thomas Frank Still Striving to Win Over the Tottenham Fans

There is not much festive cheer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After a decent start to the season under Thomas Frank, Spurs have been in poor form for several weeks. The north Londoners have won only one of their last eight games in the Premier League, a sequence which has seen them slide from third in the standings at the end of October to 14th at Christmas.

Their latest setback came at the hands of Liverpool. The turning point of last weekend’s clash between the pair came in the 33rd minute, when Xavi Simons was shown a red card for a foul on Virgil van Dijk. With a one-man advantage, Liverpool scored twice after half-time. Tottenham rallied late on, even after Cristian Romero was sent off to send them down to nine players, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

Frank is under pressure to turn things around - and soon. The former Brentford boss has yet to win over a large section of the club’s supporters. That is partly due to results, but a bigger problem for the manager could be performances. Frank is a pragmatic manager, while Tottenham is a club which has a long history of attractive, attacking soccer. It does not look like the perfect match.

Of course, a positive run of results would solidify Frank’s position, but right now his team is lacking style and substance. That must change quickly if he wants to remain in charge of a club that retains top-four ambitions.

“I think overall it was a good performance tonight, proud of the players and the team and how they responded,” Frank said after the Liverpool loss. “I actually think the first 30 was also good from us and how we responded to setbacks through the game, something we have been working very hard on, because that is the biggest thing the best teams need to do.”

Crystal Palace’s Thin Roster Desperately Needs Reinforcements

Crystal Palace delivered their worst performance of the 2025/26 season last weekend. That is not just the assessment of this writer, but also of their manager Oliver Glasner.

“Very disappointing performance today,” the Palace boss said after a 4-1 defeat by Leeds United at Elland Road. “[We] couldn't defend set plays. Honestly, it's embarrassing. [We] couldn't match their physicality today. Today is the first game [this season] we fully deserved to lose. When you lose all the duels, it's the basics, we didn't show the basics. We thought we could pass the ball, but we had no chance in the duels, and then you lose every single game.”

Glasner would not entertain any suggestion that fatigue was an issue, but it is hard to say that Palace’s congested fixture list has not had any impact on their recent dip in form. Playing in Europe for the first time as well as reaching the last eight of the EFL Cup has increased the load on a roster which is not used to playing two times a week.

No Premier League team has contested more fixtures than Palace in 2025/26. This will be their 30th game of the campaign. Their 30th game of last season came on February 10, yet their squad did not get noticeably larger or deeper over the summer.

Glasner remains reliant on a core group of players, and the recent injuries suffered by Daniel Munoz, Daichi Kamada and Jean-Philippe Mateta (who has been playing with a knee problem) suggest that the demand has taken its toll.

Still, Palace are in a terrific position. Even after that defeat by Leeds last time out, the Eagles are just three points adrift of the top four. They will be keen to return to winning ways in Sunday’s London derby.

Crystal Palace Back on Track to Compound Frank’s Woes?

Tottenham Hotspur have been dire in front of their own supporters this season, which has been part of the problem for Frank. Only three teams have a worse home record than Spurs, so perhaps they will not mind playing this match at Selhurst Park - especially as Crystal Palace have a better record away than at home.

However, Tottenham have struggled to get positive results at any ground in recent weeks. Their position of 14th in the Premier League is not a false one, but rather is supported by the underlying data. In fact, on expected goals difference Tottenham actually rank 16th in the standings.

This is a golden opportunity for Crystal Palace to end 2025 on a high. It has been a magnificent year for the club, which won its first ever trophy in the form of the FA Cup in May, before scooping the Community Shield in August. They registered their highest-ever Premier League points tally and qualified for the knockout phase of a European competition.

Palace can sign off for the calendar year by emerging triumphant over a Tottenham Hotspur team that has not had much to celebrate of late.
