Arsenal’s dream of winning the Champions League for the first time in their history is over, at least for now. A 2-1 loss at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday gave Paris Saint-Germain a 3-1 victory on aggregate in the last four of the competition. Arsenal will end the campaign without a piece of silverware.
That is a disappointment. Mikel Arteta won the FA Cup in his debut season at the Emirates Stadium, but the team back then was very different. This current group of players has made great progress over the last few years, yet Arsenal still do not have a tangible prize to show for it.
It would be harsh to be overly critical of their performance in Europe this term. Over the two legs, Arsenal matched PSG. The French team probably edged it overall, but it was a close run thing. Luis Enrique admitted after the second game that Arsenal posed his team numerous problems in both London and Paris.
The bigger frustration this season is in the Premier League. Arsenal finished as runners-up to Manchester City in 2022/23 and 2023/24, so they looked best placed to take advantage of Pep Guardiola’s team’s decline this season. Instead, Liverpool are the champions having wrapped up the title in April.
These two teams drew 2-2 at the Emirates Stadium in the first half of the season. Arsenal drew away to Manchester City and beat them at home. Their record versus their fellow big boys has not been the issue. Nor has their number of defeats: four for Arsenal compared to three for Liverpool.
The difference is that Liverpool have won seven more matches than Arsenal, who have drawn six more than the champions. The Gunners still have work to do to qualify for the Champions League, so success on Sunday would be most welcome.

What a fabulous season this has been for Liverpool. They ultimately missed out on the EFL Cup, losing in the final to Newcastle United, while the Reds exited the FA Cup and Champions League earlier than expected. Yet a Premier League title triumph is a fantastic outcome for Arne Slot and his players.
Liverpool will soon turn their focus towards planning for next season. One of the most impressive elements of their title victory is that they did not sign a single first-team player last summer. Federico Chiesa arrived from Juventus, but he has barely featured under Slot.
Liverpool will surely be more active this time around. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have committed their futures to the club, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer. Liverpool will therefore look to sign a new right-back, while they could also be in the market for a forward, a centre-half, a left-back and a central midfielder.
The powers that be at Anfield will already be drawing up their recruitment plans, but the players will be thinking about their final three games. Liverpool lacked their usual intensity in a 3-1 defeat by Chelsea last weekend, but they should be sharper when Arsenal head to Merseyside in gameweek 36.
Liverpool have been by far the best team in the division this term, so they will want to finish as far clear of second place as possible. The gap between them and Arsenal currently stands at 15, but it could be 12 or 18 at the end of the weekend. Liverpool will do everything they can to ensure it is the latter.

Liverpool wrapped up the title with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur the weekend before last. The players no doubt celebrated their triumph in the days that followed, so it was no surprise that they were below par against Chelsea last time out. Slot also shuffled his pack for the trip to Stamford Bridge, most notably in midfield.
Liverpool should be back at full strength here. The title might be wrapped up already, but they will not be short of motivation on Sunday. The Reds will want to assert their dominance over Arsenal, their closest challengers in the Premier League this season.
Whereas Liverpool have had a full week off, Arsenal were in action against PSG on Wednesday. That match will have taken a lot out of the Gunners, both mentally and physically. It may be hard for them to go again on Sunday. Arsenal cannot afford to take things too easy since they are not yet guaranteed a top-five finish, but it will be tough for them to win at Anfield.
Indeed, we expect Liverpool to come out on top in their penultimate game of the season in front of their own supporters. Go for a home victory in the standout fixture of the Premier League weekend.
