Liverpool Out to Show They Are Still the EPL Team to Beat

There is no better way to win a soccer match than with a goal in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time from a teenage debutant. That is how Liverpool eventually triumphed over Newcastle United on Monday night, as the 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha announced himself to the world by notching the fifth and deciding goal in a thrilling encounter.

Liverpool were not at their best at St James’ Park. Newcastle, no doubt motivated by their opponents’ ongoing pursuit of Alexander Isak, were fired up from the first whistle. They played with their typical aggression and intensity, and showed admirable character to level the score at 2-2 after going 2-0 down and losing Anthony Gordon to a red card.

Ngumoha’s dramatic intervention late on was a cruel way for Newcastle to lose a game they deserved something from, but Liverpool's never-say-die attitude was on display as they refused to settle for a point. Arne Slot was pleased with his team’s spirit, even if he did not particularly enjoy the spectacle from a soccer purist’s perspective.

Liverpool have won two out of two heading into the weekend. They have spent more than any other team in this summer's transfer market despite winning the title last term. The bookies have them down as favorites to claim the prize this season, ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City.

Yet there is clearly work for Slot to do. If you include the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, Liverpool have conceded two goals in each of their three matches so far this season. Ibrahima Konate and Milos Kerkez, two members of the first-choice back four, have struggled. The Reds are also having trouble halting opposition counter-attacks. Their offensive potency is clear for all to see, but Slot’s side cannot win the league if they keep conceding two goals every match.

Arsenal Aiming to Finally Clear the Last Hurdle in Title Race

Arsenal are also sitting on six points after two rounds of fixtures, and their goal difference of +6 gives them the edge over Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. It is far too early to start looking at the Premier League table, but Mikel Arteta will be pleased with the fact his team have emerged from the blocks quickly at the beginning of 2025/26.

The Gunners have shown different sides to their identity in their two outings. In a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on the opening weekend, they demonstrated their discipline and grit to grind out a win when they were not playing well. The 5-0 triumph over Leeds United, meanwhile, saw Arsenal produce some excellent soccer.

They too have splashed the cash this summer, bringing in Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke and Ebere Eze. Only Liverpool have spent more on new additions than Arsenal. Having finished as runners-up in each of the last three campaigns, Arteta and his players are desperate to clear the final hurdle and win the title.

Unlike Liverpool, there are few question marks over Arsenal’s defense. They have had the most solid unit in the division over the last few years, and two clean sheets in two games shows that Arsenal remain difficult to score against.

The doubts instead center on Arsenal's ability to create enough chances and score enough goals. Eze’s arrival offers them more spontaneity in the final third, while Gyokeres provides a natural center-forward option at the top of the pitch. Will it be enough? Only time will tell, but Arsenal look in good shape as they prepare to visit Anfield, a ground at which they have not won since 2012.

Arsenal Do Not Lose to Fellow Top-Six Sides Very Often

Given that record, a win at Anfield on Sunday would be a real statement of intent from Arsenal. They can draw confidence from their excellent recent record against their fellow big-six sides: Arsenal have not lost any of their last 22 meetings with Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool. This is a team which has consistently fared well in the biggest games.

That is why we like the look of the draw. Arteta, you feel, would settle for a point. The absence of an Arsenal win at Anfield over the last 13 years speaks for itself, and the Gunners will have to make do without Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard this weekend.

However, this Arsenal side is nothing if not resilient and they will dig in for as long as they need to. Eze is the sort of player who can create something out of nothing, while the direct running of Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli means Arsenal should carry a threat in transition.

At the same time, Liverpool pack a punch in forward areas and are generally difficult to beat on home turf. Taking all these factors into account, the tie is the way to go for sports bettors. There is a good chance both Liverpool and Arsenal will get something from this game.
