Everything was going so well for Liverpool. When they made their way to Selhurst Park on the final weekend of September, Arne Slot’s side had won 100 percent of their matches in 2025/26 after the Community Shield. They topped the Premier League table and looked like the team to beat in England’s top tier.
They still might be, but Liverpool’s run immediately prior to the October international break provided cause for concern. The Reds lost that clash at Selhurst Park, going down 2-1 to Crystal Palace. A few days later they were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Champions League.
Then came the biggest blow of all, a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea. That loss was particularly disappointing for a few reasons. First, it came against a potential rival for the title. Second, it was the second league game in a row in which Liverpool had conceded a last-gasp winner. Third, it came right before the internationals, forcing the team to reflect on the setback for a full fortnight before having the chance to put it right.
What has gone wrong? In truth, the warning signs were there even when Liverpool won five games in a row at the beginning of the Premier League campaign. During that stretch they often relied on late winning goals, and their defensive vulnerabilities gave each of their opponents a chance of getting something from the game.
The success of Slot’s side last season was built on their ability to control matches. Compared to the Jurgen Klopp era, Liverpool were more measured. This term, however, many of their games have been remarkably open and end-to-end. The last 30 minutes against Chelsea are a case in point. If Liverpool continue playing like this, they will struggle to win the title.

Had Manchester United lost to Sunderland before the international break, Ruben Amorim may well have found himself out of a job. As it was, a dominant display from the Red Devils earned them a 2-0 victory over the promoted outfit. Amorim, while still under scrutiny, lives to fight another day.
Labeling the game a potential turning point would be premature, however. There have been far too many false dawns in Amorim’s tenure to date for anyone to get carried away. Even after that triumph, United are barely inside the top half of the table. There is still an awful lot of work to be done to restore the 20-time English champions to their former glories.
The performance and result against Sunderland was a start, at least. United actually began the encounter shakily and they could easily have found themselves a goal down early on. But once they settled into their rhythm, United were the superior side. It was probably their best all-round showing of 2025/26.
“I saw today and I know they want to do the best and I know they don’t want to change the coach all the time,” Amorim said after the game. “But, like I said this week, being with the manager is: ‘I will kill myself to do anything in every transition.’ We need to show with actions.
“Sometimes when we look at our team I know for sure that they know sometimes we can do better. We need to show it on the pitch, not just at home, but also abroad.”
Even as his first anniversary at the helm approaches, Amorim has yet to win back-to-back league games as United boss. There would be no better place to do that for the first time than at Anfield, the home of United’s arch-rivals.

Manchester United have actually done a pretty good job of creating chances this season. Their finishing has at times let them down, but they are at least fashioning opportunities on a regular basis. However, they are still one of the weaker teams in the division defensively.
That is a worry up against a Liverpool side that can score goals for fun even when several players are out of form or have not yet settled (Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak). Amorim’s first priority on Sunday should be to keep things tight at the back.
Indeed, a solid defensive display in the first half could make the home crowd nervous. If United are able to get to half-time with the score level, they will consider it a job well done. Given how often Liverpool have started games slowly this term, we fancy their chances of doing just that.
In the end, though, the Reds should prove too strong. Even amid their current struggles, Liverpool are a better team than United. They will also have the home crowd roaring them on. Go for a draw at half-time and a Liverpool win at full-time, a bet which is available at very attractive odds.
