Are Manchester City back? It is too early to say for sure, but they certainly caught the eye on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
City did not have everything their own way in the opening half an hour against Wolverhampton Wanderers, who gave their illustrious opponents something to think about on the counter-attack, but in the end Pep Guardiola's side proved too strong for their hosts at Molineux.
A 4-0 victory represented the perfect start to the new campaign for a club which endured a difficult year last time out. A third-place finish can hardly be called a disaster, but City had won the title in each of the previous four years and their collapse, when it came, was remarkable.
It became clear last term that City needed to rebuild their squad, and after an initial outlay in January, the club has brought in more fresh blood this summer. Two debutants, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, found the back of the net against Wolves, with Reijnders particularly impressive. Erling Haaland scored City’s two other goals.
There is no reason why Guardiola’s men cannot challenge for the title this season. Liverpool and Arsenal are also aiming to finish atop the table, but City will hope they have now found the right balance back to front, and the ideal blend of youth and experience.
The return from injury of Rodri will be pivotal to their ambitions. The Ballon d’Or holder is the player who makes this team tick, and City must hope he gets back to his best after a serious knee injury ruled him out of the majority of 2024/25. City are a different side with Rodri in it.
Their other wish is that Guardiola has recovered some of his mojo after looking tired for much of last season. Another win on Saturday would do the City boss no harm whatsoever.

The Thomas Frank era has started well at Tottenham Hotspur. The replacement for Ange Postecoglou oversaw a 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, and while Spurs went on to lose that match on penalties, there were plenty of positives to take from their overall performance against a team that, by common consensus, is the best in Europe right now.
Tottenham followed that up with a routine 3-0 victory over Burnley. Their opposition at the opening weekend of the Premier League season were not the toughest, but Spurs nevertheless produced a convincing performance. Most pleasing for their supporters was the balance they showed from front to back, something that was often missing under Postecoglou.
After finishing 17th in the league last season, it would be hard for Tottenham to do any worse this season. Improvement is virtually guaranteed. Having said that, Frank probably needs to get Tottenham challenging for the top six to satisfy his bosses and the supporters. That, combined with another trophy, would represent an excellent start to life in north London.
Tottenham fans have been pleased with their new manager’s pragmatism up to now. He produced two different game plans to face PSG and Burnley, rather than sending his team out to play the same way. It goes without saying, though, that this weekend’s trip to Manchester will be trickier for Tottenham than their fixture on the first weekend of 2025/26.

Manchester City looked back to their best against Wolves, but we will have to wait and see whether they can sustain that. Just as Burnley were kind opponents for Tottenham first up, Wolves have not exactly been tipped for great success this season either. We will get a better idea of how both City and Spurs are set up for the campaign ahead on Saturday.
The best online sportsbooks have City down as favorites to win this game. That is not surprising, even though Tottenham won 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium in 2024/25. City finished third last term compared to 17th for Spurs, so they are starting from a higher base. They also have home advantage on Saturday.
In our view, though, the best way to approach this fixture from a betting perspective is via the goals market. We should be in store for a high-scoring encounter, and odds of +110 on over 3.5 goals in total looks like good value.
For context, this wager was successful in each of the last four games between the two teams at the Etihad. The match before that featured three goals, so it almost paid out on that occasion too.
Frank is more adaptable than Postecoglou, and less of an attack-minded idealist. But that does not mean that his teams do not carry a threat going forward. Brentford scored in five of their last six meetings with City under Frank.
Over 3.5 goals is the way to go in the early kick-off on Saturday.
