Manchester United were dismal last season and the early signs in 2025/26 suggest they are yet to improve much. Chelsea can take advantage by coming out on top at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim Is Running Out of Time at Manchester United

It is Groundhog Day at Manchester United. A manager whose appointment was greeted with hopes that he could be the one to lift the club out of its malaise is under pressure. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag all failed to restore United to its former glories. Almost a year into the job, Ruben Amorim has a worse record than all his predecessors in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

After a 3-0 defeat by Manchester City last weekend, Amorim has a win percentage of 25.8 percent as United boss. He has won just eight of his 31 Premier League games at the helm. Last month his team were dumped out of the EFL Cup by minnows Grimsby Town, a club which is currently mid-table in the fourth tier of English soccer.

Amorim initially resisted United’s attempts to appoint him last November. He wanted the job but preferred to wait until the summer, with the Portuguese of the belief that he needed a full pre-season to get his ideas across. He has now had a full pre-season, as well as additions to the roster worth almost $300m in total. Yet United have not improved.

The struggles of the coaches listed above suggest there is a deeper-rooted problem at Old Trafford. Yet even though Amorim is not wholly to blame for their ongoing difficulties, the finger is increasingly being pointed at the manager. Indeed, United should have finished much higher than 15th last season. And with the caveat that it is still early, they should not be as low as 14th in the current standings.

Amorim remains wedded to his 3-4-3 formation despite United’s inability to get results while using it. The Portuguese is running out of time to get things right.

Chelsea Waiting to Show They Have Consistency to Challenge

Chelsea went from ecstasy to agony towards the end of their last Premier League encounter. A goal down to Brentford at half-time, an improved performance after the break saw Chelsea establish a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo. It looked like the latter’s thunderous strike had won the match for Enzo Maresca's men.

Brentford had other ideas. In second-half stoppage time, a long throw found Fabio Carvalho at the back post and the former Liverpool forward applied the finishing touch. In an instant, Chelsea had two points snatched away from them at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It was a reminder that Maresca's side remain a work in progress. Chelsea finished last season strongly, qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Conference League. They were also successful in the USA over the summer, lifting the Club World Cup trophy after a comprehensive victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

That led to suggestions that Chelsea might be ready to challenge for the Premier League title. For now, though, they are still behind Liverpool and Arsenal in the betting markets. Many would also put Manchester City ahead of Chelsea given they have been there and done it many times before.

"It's a shame [to concede late equaliser] but it happens," Maresca told BBC Sport. "Probably we could manage that moment of the game better but in the end we concede and lose two points. We try to win every game but know we won't win every game. It's a shame because we conceded so late.”

A victory at Old Trafford would make up for the disappointment of last weekend, but Chelsea have not won any of their last 12 league visits to Manchester United's home ground.

Chelsea Can Triumph at Old Trafford to Compound United Woes

Chelsea's aforementioned recent record at Old Trafford leaves a lot to be desired, but they will beat Manchester United away from home again at some point. If we look at the state of these two teams, it could easily happen this weekend.

Amorim will not deviate from his 3-4-3 setup, but its shortcomings will play into Chelsea's hands. With Palmer just ahead of Caicedo and Fernandez, Chelsea will outnumber United in the center of the pitch. That was United's main problem against Manchester City, and Chelsea will similarly be able to take the ball away from the Red Devils.

United do carry a threat on the counter-attack and Chelsea must ensure they are well prepared for their opponents’ quick breaks forward. But provided they are sufficiently disciplined out of possession, Chelsea have the tools to defeat United. They are a better coached team and in Palmer, a boyhood United fan who is now fit again, they have a genuine difference-maker.

Amorim has almost been in charge of United for the equivalent of a full Premier League season, and the results in that time are extremely poor. Chelsea, on the other hand, have made clear progress over the last few months, even though they are still not the finished article.

Amorim needs a big win soon, but he is unlikely to get it on Saturday. Go for a Chelsea victory when these two Premier League heavyweights lock horns.
