My -118 Pick for Manchester United vs. West Ham United

Back Manchester United to win the first half. The Red Devils have generally started well this season, whereas West Ham United often take a while to get going.

Manchester United Still Looking for Consistency This Term

At half-time on Sunday, things were not looking good for Manchester United. Ruben Amorim’s side trailed Crystal Palace by a goal to nil after Jean-Philippe Mateta converted from the penalty spot at Selhurst Park. Palace had been the better team in the first 45 minutes, with United staring another defeat in the face. That would have left them in the bottom half of the Premier League, while extending their winless run to four matches.

Instead, United fought back in the second period. Quick-fire goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount, both of which were fine finishes, turned a deficit into a lead. United were far from perfect after the break, and they clearly benefited from fatigue setting in among the Palace players, but Amorim’s men at least played with more purpose and aggression from minute 46 onwards.

Of course, the key now is to ensure United play that way from the first whistle. You cannot finish in the top four of the Premier League if you only turn up for half a game. Yet this was an important result for United, who had suffered an ignominious 1-0 home defeat by 10-man Everton a few days earlier. Amorim will hope it proves to be a turning point.

“It's important to win every game and again today was once again the proof that if you play the same way, but we increase the way we fight for every ball in the small details, the certainty on the pass, the movements,” Amorim said after the triumph over Palace, which moved his team up to seventh in the standings going into the upcoming midweek round of fixtures. “If we work on that in the different pace, we can beat anyone. So, let's try to show that in the next game.”

Nuno Espirito Santo Still Has Work to Do at West Ham United

West Ham United picked up following Nuno Espirito Santo’s appointment as manager, but there is still considerable work to be done. The Hammers struggled to lay a glove on an out-of-form Liverpool side on Sunday, as a 2-0 defeat by the defending champions left Nuno’s men outside the bottom three on goals scored alone. West Ham are not out of trouble yet.

Having said that, the team has improved since Nuno’s arrival. Graham Potter struggled to make an impact at West Ham both last season and this, and he was relieved of his duties after losing four of his first five games at the helm in 2025/26. Nuno came in and guided West Ham to a 1-1 draw with Everton in his first match, before overseeing a run which saw the Londoners take seven points from a possible nine against Newcastle United, Burnley and Bournemouth.

Perhaps that run convinced some supporters that relegation was no longer something to worry about. But as detailed above, West Ham’s position remains precarious. They have some tough fixtures coming up too. After this week’s trip to Old Trafford, West Ham will face Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Manchester City before Christmas. In other words, they will do battle with four of the top seven over the next few weeks.

One thing is for sure: West Ham need to tighten up at the back if they are to pull clear of the drop zone. Only last-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers have conceded more goals than the Hammers, whose backline has been breached on 27 occasions. West Ham also rank second-bottom for expected goals against, which shows they are giving up too many chances.

“It’s a quick turnaround [to the Manchester United game on Thursday], and we’re going to have two games in a short period that will require a lot of effort from us,” Nuno said on Sunday. “We have to give a good answer, which I expect to happen.”

Manchester United Will Look to Make a Fast Start on Thursday

Manchester United were slow out of the blocks against Crystal Palace on Sunday, and Amorim will want to see his team make a faster start in this game. Generally, they have done that pretty well this term. Only Manchester City, Palace, Arsenal and Chelsea have better first-half records than United so far this season.

West Ham, on the other hand, have tended to hit the ground trudging. In the half-time table they are third-bottom, ahead of only Burnley and Wolves. In 13 games, West Ham have been behind after 45 minutes on six occasions. That suggests they may struggle in the opening period at Old Trafford.

United’s come-from-behind defeat of Palace will have raised confidence in the camp, and that should work to their advantage here. United will also be keen to cause West Ham problems from the get-go having failed to do so in their last home game against Everton.

All things considered, we reckon United will have the better of the match in the first half. Back Amorim’s charges to be ahead at the midway point of Thursday’s clash at Old Trafford.
