It took Newcastle United a while to get going last season, but eventually they found their rhythm and went on to secure Champions League qualification. After another slow start this term, Eddie Howe is hoping his team have now turned the corner and can start looking up the Premier League table.
It was a difficult summer for Newcastle. Alexander Isak, their star man, went on strike to force through a move to Liverpool, which eventually went through on transfer deadline day. The Magpies struggled to land some of their own targets, with some fans critical of the club's hierarchy as a result.
In those circumstances, perhaps it was no surprise that Newcastle hit the ground trudging. Results at St James’ Park have generally been good, but Howe’s men have found life difficult away from home. That is why the 4-1 thumping of Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday was so pleasing.
That victory came just a few days after Newcastle had lost 2-1 to Marseille in the Champions League. Against Everton, they were clinical. Newcastle stormed into a 3-0 lead in the first half, putting the game out of the reach of their opponents. For the first time all campaign, Newcastle have now won back-to-back matches in the Premier League.
“We scored goals, which we haven’t done regularly enough away from home, we looked fresh and we made some tactical tweaks,” Howe said afterwards.
“That was really important as we haven’t had that feeling enough, or at all. Very pleased today that we were able to put that right and give the fans that winning feeling to go back to Newcastle with. We have a lot of work to do to say we have solved some of the issues we have had, but it is a big moment for us, a step forward.”

Thomas Frank is under pressure as Tottenham Hotspur manager. A 2-1 home defeat by Fulham at the weekend left his team in the bottom half of the Premier League table. It was also Spurs’s third loss on the bounce in all competitions. After a positive start to his tenure, questions are beginning to be asked of Frank.
Results have been mediocre at best up to now, but the former Brentford boss has also been criticised for his team's style of play. Tottenham supporters value attractive, attacking soccer. Frank, on the other hand, is a pragmatist. It looks like an awkward fit right now.
In fairness to Frank, he inherited a team that was far too easy to play against under Ange Postecoglou. He was always likely to prioritise defensive solidity as a first step, before working on the attack afterwards.
However, Spurs have shipped 13 goals in their last four outings, so they are hardly a model of resolve right now. And their home form has been dismal. Only last-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers have collected fewer points in front of their own fans. On top of that, the style of soccer has often been uninspiring. Spurs are missing some creative players, but they should still be offering more in open play.
Frank deserves time to turn the situation around, but he must ensure this negative run does not last too much longer. He cannot afford to lose the backing of the fans or the belief of his players. A win at Newcastle would be a step in the right direction, not least because it would likely result in Spurs climbing a few places given how congested the middle portion of the table is.

Tottenham Hotspur have a pretty good record on their travels. Only Arsenal have collected more points on rival territory than Frank’s side, who have won four and drawn one of their first six matches away from home. However, any confidence that could have been garnered from that sort of record has probably vanished on account of Tottenham’s poor results of late.
Indeed, Spurs have conceded nine goals in their last two away matches against Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. Their last away game prior to that was at St James’ Park, where they lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the EFL Cup. That bodes ill for Tuesday’s tussle in the northeast of England.
The Magpies have the bit between their teeth at the moment, and even when they were struggling at opposition grounds, Newcastle’s home form held up. Only Manchester City, Arsenal, Brentford and Aston Villa have registered more victories in front of their supporters than Newcastle, who beat Manchester City 2-1 at St James’ late last month.
With Tottenham in a bad place amid a poor run of form, Newcastle are poised to take advantage in the midweek round of Premier League fixtures. Go for a home win in Tuesday’s standout fixture.
