Tottenham Hotspur finished 17th in the Premier League last season, although they were never really in danger of relegation. Finishing one spot above the dreaded dotted line was supposed to be a one-off, in large part attributable to Ange Postecoglou’s decision to prioritize the Europa League, a tournament Spurs ended up winning.

Tottenham are not as low as 17th at the time of writing, but they are in a worse position. That is because, unlike last term, the relegation places are not yet decided. Wolverhampton Wanderers are going down and Burnley probably will be too, but West Ham United in 17th are still competitive. 

Tottenham are four points clear of the drop zone at the time of writing, but there is still considerable work to do. No team in the division - not even Burnley or Wolves - has a worse record over the last 10 rounds of games. Spurs have collected just four points in that time. Worryingly, interim boss Igor Tudor has yet to make an impact.

“I cannot tell you anything new,” Tudor said after the 2-1 loss to Fulham on Sunday, before going on to list his team’s many shortcomings. “We need to find the forces inside each of us. I said to the players: ‘It’s always what you’re going to do, what you want to do with yourself,’ you know? 

“More personality, more wish to do before reacting, plenty of things. We are lacking when we attack, we lack the quality to score the goal. We are lacking in the middle to run and we are lacking behind to stay there to suffer and not concede the goal. So, an amazing situation. Amazing.”

If Tudor initially doubted the magnitude of the job he was appointed to last month, he now understands just how bad the situation is. Tottenham are not too good to go down, as anyone who has watched them this season knows.

Crystal Palace May Soon Put All Their Eggs in European Basket

For Crystal Palace, the Premier League no longer holds a great deal of importance. They are not yet mathematically safe from the threat of relegation, but a 10-point lead over West Ham United in 17th ought to be enough for them to extend their stay in the top flight for another campaign at least.

A top-eight finish, which would probably bring European football, is not out of the question yet. Palace are five points adrift of that zone of the table as things stand. However, there are several sides above them in the standings and they have one of the toughest ends to the season in terms of fixtures.

We may soon see Palace switch their focus to the Conference League. A 3-1 aggregate victory over Zrinjski Mostar in the knockout phase play-offs earned Oliver Glasner’s team a place in the round of 16, where they will face AEK Larnaca of Cyprus. If Palace were to win that tournament, they would add another trophy to their cabinet - their third in two years - and qualify for the Europa League. That is quite the prize.

Of course, Palace will not simply give up on the Premier League. They can still register a record points tally, and even if they fall short of that target the Eagles will be keen to finish as high up as possible. But the Conference League is ultimately what will define 2025/26 for the south Londoners.

Palace were beaten at the weekend, but there were still elements of their performance against Manchester United to be pleased with. The Eagles led 1-0 at half-time, but the game turned when Maxence Lacroix gave away a penalty and was sent off in the same incident. United ended up winning 2-1, but it was a decent display from Palace all things considered.

The mood at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is apathetic, which is probably worse than anger. Tottenham fans have lowered their expectations over the last 12 months, but the team is still coming up short. 

In each of his previous jobs, Tudor has got off to a positive start. Not at Spurs - and there is a danger that things will get worse before they get better. This clash with Crystal Palace is monumental with Liverpool up next. Tottenham need to get some points on the board quickly.

Palace have not been at their best for some time, but they showed signs of life against Manchester United. The noise around Glasner appears to have quietened down for now and, in a tactical sense, the Eagles usually carry more of a threat against the bigger teams.
