Back Liverpool to beat Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Both teams have had their issues this season, but the Reds are a better side if they are at their best.

It has been an eventful December so far for Liverpool. The month started with a disappointing 1-1 home draw with Sunderland, a setback which was quickly followed by another in the form of a 3-3 draw at Leeds United. Liverpool were 2-0 and 3-2 up in that game, yet they still conspired to drop two points at Elland Road.
The on-field events that day were soon overshadowed by an extraordinary post-match interview given by Mohamed Salah. In it, the Liverpool legend accused the club of “throwing me under the bus” and complained that he no longer had a working relationship with Arne Slot. It was an explosive interview and one which instantly put Salah’s future in doubt.
Thankfully for Liverpool, things have calmed down since then. Slot left Salah out of his traveling party for the Champions League clash with Inter, a bold decision that was vindicated when his side won 1-0. Liverpool then followed that up with a 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday, with Salah looking much sharper after appearing as a first-half substitute.
The Egypt international has now departed for Morocco, where he will represent his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. His future remains up in the air, but a January departure no longer feels inevitable. Crucially, Slot did not lose his authority over the episode. If anything, his position was strengthened.
Even so, there is still plenty of work for Liverpool to do. They have the chance to win back-to-back Premier League games this weekend for the first time since September. Unless they can string a winning run together, they will struggle to climb back into the top four. That, rather than the retention of the title, is now the target for Liverpool, who are currently two points shy of the Champions League qualification places.

Tottenham Hotspur need a result even more than Liverpool do. It has been a tough start to the campaign for Thomas Frank, whose side showed early promise before the problems set in. After a 3-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest last time out, Tottenham find themselves in the bottom half of the table.
Their performance at Forest was arguably Tottenham’s worst of 2025/26. As well as offering little in attack, a familiar problem this term, the north Londoners were shaky at the back too. Patience with Frank is beginning to run thin, not just because of results but due to performances too.
Soccer clubs have identities. These can be changed - success is invariably welcome no matter the methods - but that does not mean they are insignificant. Tottenham are a club which has long prided itself on playing an attractive brand of soccer. “To dare is to do” reads their official motto. Frank looks like an awkward fit.
After all, this is a coach who is a pragmatist above all else. His Brentford team were one of the most direct sides in the Premier League, but that strategy is harder to pull off at Tottenham, who automatically have more possession than the Bees due to their status as a bigger club.
Injuries have not helped Frank, with creative talents such as James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski on the treatment table. But there are serious question marks over whether the manager knows how to set up a team to create chances from open play.
Tottenham’s home form is a related issue. Only the bottom three of Burnley, West Ham United and West Ham United have collected fewer points in front of their own fans. Unless that changes, Frank will struggle to win over the Tottenham faithful.

Tottenham’s dismal record on their own turf is one reason to back a Liverpool win here. Another is the simple fact that, all things being equal, the Reds have better players at their disposal. That does not always translate into the result, but it certainly makes Slot’s men the favorites.
Liverpool are clearly imperfect, particularly defensively. They kept a clean sheet against Brighton, but that was primarily down to the opposition’s wayward finishing. However, this Tottenham team really struggles to fashion clear-cut opportunities. That will help Liverpool’s backline, who will aim to keep Spurs at arm's length as much as they can
The visitors to London can also take advantage of the tense mood in the terraces. Tottenham’s fans could get on their players’ backs if things are not going well. That would play into Liverpool’s hands and make their task easier.
Spurs have only won two league games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and those victories came against Burnley and Brentford. Liverpool are a much tougher proposition. Slot’s side can make it three wins in a row in all competitions in their final outing before Christmas, leaving Tottenham to rue another difficult encounter on familiar soil.
