Tottenham Hotspur put on a show on Tuesday night, scoring four goals without reply against Copenhagen in the Champions League. It was a much-needed offensive performance from Spurs on home turf, but stiffer tests lie ahead as Thomas Frank seeks to lead them to a top-four finish in the Champions League.
When appointing a new manager to replace one who has been sacked, soccer clubs often choose someone who is very different to his predecessor. That is precisely what Tottenham did in the summer. Out went Ange Postecoglou, an attack-minded dogmatist, and in came Thomas Frank, famed for his pragmatism and adaptability at Brentford.
The move has its upsides. Frank has made Spurs more solid and it is striking that they have the best away record in the Premier League so far this season. Tottenham were far too easy to play against last term. They are a much more robust outfit now.
The problem has been at the other end of the field, as typified by a pitiful attacking display in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea. That result left Spurs with the fourth-worst home record in the division. They are struggling to create chances overall, with Frank's side a lowly 15th in the expected goals table.
There were more positive signs in that regard against Copenhagen, but we will have to wait and see whether Spurs can be more inventive against Premier League opposition. The Chelsea loss was a low point in that regard, but Frank would no doubt argue that his first job upon taking charge was to stiffen up a side that grew soft last campaign.
There is no need for too much doom and gloom given Tottenham are currently sixth in the league and just two points adrift of Manchester City in second.

Manchester United's three-game winning streak was brought to an end by Nottingham Forest last weekend. Ruben Amorim’s men took the lead through Casemiro, who headed home from a corner, but two quick-fire goals from Forest early in the second half left them trailing. In the end, a wonderful late strike from Amad Diallo earned United a 2-2 draw at the City Ground.
It was important that United did not lose to Sean Dyche’s crew, and instead kept their unbeaten run ticking over. There is still considerable work to do before United are able to challenge for the title, but there have been clear signs of improvement compared to last season. United are eighth right now, but they too trail Manchester City in second by a mere two points.
United struggled with fashioning opportunities in 2023/24, much like Tottenham are now. That was the main reason why they finished 15th, their worst showing for decades. The Red Devils set about revamping their frontline over the summer - and that has helped immensely. Amorim’s team are third in the aforementioned expected goals ranking, behind only Crystal Palace and City
But United are nevertheless searching for the right balance. As their offense has improved, their defense has become leakier. The same expected goals data shows that only Burnley and Nottingham Forest have given up more chances than Amorim’s charges. Only the bottom five have conceded more goals.
Amorim recently celebrated his first anniversary as United boss. At times it looked like he would not make it that far, but the Portuguese must do more over the next 12 months if he is to still be in situ in November 2026.
A strong end to the calendar year would do his position no harm whatsoever. United must at least be in the top-four conversation this season. Right now they are, but the club's supporters have seen more than their fair share of false dawns in recent years.

Tottenham’s official motto translates from Latin as: ‘to dare is to do’. This is a club with a history of doing things with a certain style and swagger. Frank’s pragmatism has been welcome in the early months, but his next task is to make this team into one that resonates with the fans.
Home form is vital in that regard, but we expect this to be another difficult afternoon for Spurs in north London. With their speed in transition, United are dangerous opponents on their travels - as they demonstrated in a recent triumph over Liverpool at Anfield.
United's defense has been ropey up to now, yet Tottenham have struggled to progress the ball up the pitch and that will make life easier for Amorim's rearguard. And while Tottenham only conceded once against Chelsea last weekend, they gave up numerous excellent chances.
We do not expect a blowout in Saturday's early kick-off, but United have what it takes to edge Spurs out in what is likely to be a close encounter. Go for a United victory in this clash between two members of the Premier League's big six.
