My -120 Pick for Liverpool vs. Newcastle United

Liverpool have been poor in the Premier League since the turn of the year, but Newcastle United have struggled away from home all season. The hosts can edge this one.

Liverpool Are Struggling to Turn Their Poor Form Around

Liverpool are not really enjoying themselves this year. February is just around the corner and Arne Slot’s side are still waiting for their first league victory of 2026. A 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday was the latest domestic setback they have suffered since New Year’s Day, following on from four consecutive draws with Leeds United, Fulham, Arsenal and Burnley.

The defeat by Bournemouth last time out actually brought to an end a 13-match winless streak for Liverpool, although it did not feel like that. That is because the sequence contained several draws, most of which were against teams that the Reds would ordinarily expect to beat. It is also because performances were generally ordinary during that time, with a couple of notable exceptions in the Champions League.

Slot has been quick to highlight Liverpool’s struggles against low defensive blocks in recent weeks, but that was not the problem against Bournemouth. Having leveled the score at 2-2 from 2-0 down, the momentum was with Liverpool. Yet after the fourth goal of the game, it was Bournemouth who pushed for a winner which came their way in second-half stoppage time.

Manchester United and Chelsea have both improved after managerial changes, something that may start to worry Slot. In fairness, the Dutchman still has plenty of credit in the bank after winning the title last term. But his team are now sixth in the standings and under pressure to get back to winning ways in the Premier League as soon as possible.

"Maybe that sums up our season. Every time something else, it's every time something special, how we concede but we concede. The only ones to blame are ourselves,” Slot said after the defeat at the Vitality Stadium. He will now be looking for a reaction this weekend.

Newcastle United Must Improve Their Record Away From Home

Newcastle United were also dealt a dose of disappointment last weekend, as they slumped to a 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa. The Magpies have continually failed to put a consistent run of results together this season, and until they do that they will not climb into the top four. Newcastle are still only five points shy of the Champions League qualification spots, but it is telling that they have never been higher than fifth in 2025/26 - and that was only for a few days.

“It was blustery and windy, we can't use that as an excuse, we are just disappointed with a lot of our final actions because I thought generally we were okay in the game,” Eddie Howe said after last Sunday’s defeat. “We had enough time to recover from our last game. It is a season where we are constantly mentally challenged in respect of playing and recovering.”

Howe’s charges recently won three league games on the bounce, defeating Burnley, Crystal Palace and Leeds to climb the table. But apart from that, they have only won back-to-back matches once this term. Newcastle routinely follow two steps forward with another one in the opposite direction.

Newcastle’s latest loss came at St James’ Park, but their biggest issue this campaign has been their away form. Just two of their 11 matches at rival grounds have ended with Newcastle celebrating a victory. They rank 11th in the away table, below the likes of Everton, Fulham and Nottingham Forest.

The only way that would be tolerable is if Newcastle were perfect at home. As the defeat by Villa showed, they are not. Six teams in the division have a better record in front of their own fans than the Magpies, who have now lost three times at St James’. A big improvement is needed if Newcastle are to finish in the top four.

Who Will Triumph at Anfield When These Two Teams Meet?

This is a tricky game to call. Neither Liverpool nor Newcastle United are firing on all cylinders right now, and recent results will have damaged confidence in both camps. Newcastle have been better than Liverpool in the league over the last month or so, yet their away record makes for tough reading.

Newcastle’s record at Anfield bodes ill too. Remarkably, the Magpies have not won at Liverpool’s home in the Premier League since way back in 1994, before many of their current players were born. In addition, they have not won a top-flight game against Liverpool at any ground since 2015.

Newcastle will also be missing some key players through injury, whereas Liverpool are starting to get bodies back. That is another reason to favor Slot's side, for all that they have been distinctly average over the last few weeks.

Liverpool are going through a difficult spell, but the top four remains well within reach. Slot must ensure his players do not lose faith. One way to restore belief in the locker room would be with a victory over Newcastle, a potential Champions League rival, on Saturday night.
