Inter Have Bounced Back From Champions League Defeat

There were two contrasting views of how Inter would feel about the Club World Cup. One opinion stated that, having suffered two heartbreaking near-misses in the Serie A title race and the Champions League in 2024/25, Inter would much rather be on vacation rather than competing in the USA.

The other was that the Club World Cup gave the Nerazzurri a welcome opportunity to move on quickly from those setbacks, and to take their first steps forward under Christian Chivu after the former defender replaced Simone Inzaghi as Inter’s head coach on the eve of the tournament.

That second assessment appears more accurate after the group stage, in which Inter amassed seven out of a possible nine points. Chivu’s team are now targeting a victory over Fluminense in the round of 16.

Fluminense Among Brazil’s Strong Performers This Summer

All four Brazilian teams successfully qualified for the round of 16, with Fluminense doing so courtesy of a second-place finish in Group F. They drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund in their first outing, before beating Ulsan HD 4-2. They concluded the group stage with another goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

A defeat in that game would have sent Fluminense home early, and the Sundowns had chances to win that decisive clash. The Brazilians held on, though, and they are now looking to shock Inter.

Having kept two clean sheets in the group stage, Fluminense will aim to keep things tight at the back again here. If they can register another one here, they have a good chance of going through.

Inter Aiming to Get Back on Track at the Club World Cup

Inter have recovered well from those disappointments in Serie A and the Champions League. They may come unstuck if or when they face a genuine powerhouse in the latter stages, but they should have enough to get past Fluminense.

Chivu’s team have played pretty well up to now, whereas there are more doubts over Renato Gaucho’s men.

As long as they play to their potential, Inter should come out on top in this one. Go with the Europeans at the Bank of America Stadium.
