The 2025 Leagues Cup begins on July 29 and will end on August 31
Unlike previous versions, this year's tournament has a different look, with only 18 teams from the MLS participating, along with all 18 Liga MX sides
Last year's competition saw an all-MLS final, with the Columbus Crew overthrowing Los Angeles FC
The Leagues Cup is an annual competition between clubs from Liga MX in Mexico and Major League Soccer, the top-tier league in the United States and Canada. The tournament launched in 2019, after 2023, when it massively expanded to include every club invited from Liga MX and MLS. It has now been trimmed to this year’s format.
Different from prior tournaments with no group stage format, the league phase kicks things off. Phase one will see teams play three matches in a designated set region. Teams will play three games against teams from their set region who are not from their league ( MLS teams will only play Liga MX clubs and vice versa).
36 teams total, 18 from Liga MX and 18 from MLS, with 62 total fixtures taking place in the United States and Canada. After the league phase concludes, the top four-ranked clubs from Liga MX and MLS will encounter each other in the knockout stage. The pairings in the quarterfinals will be determined as follows based on League stage performance (MLS 1 vs. LIGA MX 4, MLS 2 vs. LIGA MX 3, MLS 3 vs. LIGA MX 2, and MLS 4 vs. LIGA MX 1). Like the previous tournaments, the top three clubs will book their spot in the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup after the conclusion of the 2025 Leagues Cup.

The Columbus Crew became the second team from the MLS to win this tournament, which debuted in 2019. Since the Crew were MLS Cup winners in 2023, they received an automatic spot in the knockout stage in the round of 32.
Throughout its impressive run to the final, Columbus only faced competition from MLS, getting the better of Sporting Kansas City, the defending champions, Inter Miami, New York City FC and the Philadelphia Union to stamp their tickets to the final to face the Black and Gold Falcons.
In the 2024 League Cup final, the Crew had the advantage by playing in front of their home faithful. The score remained deadlocked at a goal apiece until Columbus busted open Los Angeles FC’s backline, scoring two goals in stoppage time to claim a 3-1 victory in an all-MLS League Cup Final.
Four previous additions to this tournament have been made since 2019. 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19, and 2022 never took place because of the scheduling congestion with the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Two teams from Liga MX and MLS have won the event.
Year | Winners | Runners-up |
---|---|---|
2019 | Cruz Azul | Tigres UANL |
2021 | Club León | Seattle Sounders |
2023 | Inter Miami CF | Nashville SC |
2024 | Columbus Crew | Los Angeles FC |
The winning squad collects a nice bonus for their bank account for winning the month-long club tournament.
Although the price figures fluctuate yearly, last year, reportedly, the purse for the whole tournament was $40 million, to be distributed to the clubs that participated and were performance-driven. After the tournament is concluded, the top three sides will earn a berth in the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup, a club tournament featuring teams from various top-flight leagues across North America.
