NBA Player Props and Best Bets: Luka Doncic, Tyrese Maxey & More Picks for Sunday, Feb. 22

As the week comes to an end, here are my top NBA player prop picks for the day’s action.

Grayson Allen scored 27 points to help lead the Phoenix Suns past the Orlando Magic, while Victor Wembanyama dominated the highlight reel with 28 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists in an easy win over the Sacramento Kings.

Today’s matchups include standouts between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as the Boston Celtics against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Klay Thompson under 2.5 threes (+106) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Thompson made 2.9 threes per game on a career-worst 37.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc this season. He also went under in three of five games in February, only shooting 31.3 percent from range in the process. 

While Cooper Flagg’s absence means that there will be more shots to go around, it also means that the Dallas Mavericks could struggle to get into their offensive rhythm. The Mavs and Indiana Pacers have also been the two best teams at limiting their opponents from beyond the arc, so this should be a game that is won on the interior.

Ryan Kalkbrenner under 7.5 rebounds (+112) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Mousaa Diabate and Miles Bridges are still suspended due to their recent brawl with the Detroit Pistons, which means that Kalkbrenner should lock down the starting minutes. He played 30 and 36 in his last two games and split the over/under in those, going for four and 13 rebounds.

The Washington Wizards have been pretty terrible on the boards all year, and Kalkbrenner is going to get plenty of opportunities. With that being said, his wiry frame does not allow him to be a truly dominant player on the boards, and I am interested in the value of betting the under.

Luka Doncic over 7.5 assists (-136) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Doncic has struggled as a scorer against the Celtics in years past because of the stellar defense of Jaylen Brown, who is one of the few players who has the strength to block Doncic on his drives. However, there’s no guarantee that Brown draws that assignment, since he has to provide the majority of Boston’s offense. 

A smart way to protect against both scenarios is by betting on Doncic to beat his assists line, which he did with 11 in the team’s return from the All-Star break. Austin Reaves and LeBron James are both available tonight, and although the Celtics typically do a nice job of limiting their opponents’ assists, that’s a lot of firepower to contain.

Tyrese Maxey over 29.5 points (+102) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Anthony Edwards said a couple of days ago that he scored 40 points because he had to, since Cade Cunningham did the night before. I foresee a similar situation unfolding here, where Edwards and Maxey both race past 30 points in a hard-fought matchup between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Maxey scored at least 27 points in five straight games, although he only went over in two of those. However, the Wolves are only 16th in points allowed per game over the last few weeks, and while they have size for Joel Embiid on the interior, Maxey averaged nearly 29 per night and can score from anywhere.

Karl-Anthony Towns under 12.5 rebounds (-128) at FanDuel Sportsbook

I understand the allure of taking Towns’ over against an NBA team that is starting Jalen Smith at center (with all due respect to Mr. Smith). With that being said, Towns went under this line in five of his last six games and split the over/under in two matchups with the Chicago Bulls, both of which came during the first couple of weeks of the season.

The Bulls are at a real size disadvantage when they take the floor, but the Knicks have other wings and bigs that can help on the glass. At the end of it all, this line is just too high for me to confidently take the over.
