NFL Weather Week 4 and Odds: Cool and Rainy in Ireland, Hot and Humid in Tampa

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night keeps the post office from getting its job done, but they can make it pretty hard for NFL players to do their jobs on Game Day.  But like postal carriers, NFL players trudge on through the weather to get the job done.

We haven’t seen any truly harsh weather on Game Day just yet, but it will happen eventually. To that end, we’ll take a look at the weather forecast for each game and note which ones bettors should be aware of when putting money down.

Minnesota Vikings (-2.5) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (+124), O/U 40.5

For this game, fans and bettors need to be aware of a little more than just the weather. They need to worry about the weather in Ireland, where it is scheduled to take place. While our clocks will say 9:30 a.m. EST on Sunday, the game will get underway in Ireland at 2:30 p.m.

It will likely feel pretty chilly to the guys on the field. The temperature is expected to be 59 degrees with a 9-mph wind coming out of the northeast with gusts reaching 15 mph. If this game were set anywhere in the U.S., the weather would not be too concerning.

However, since the game is being held in Ireland, any potential distraction becomes exponentially worse. Pittsburgh knows how to handle the winds in Pennsylvania, but handling them in Ireland is a different matter.

It won't be so cold that guys will want to wear a couple of layers; the coolness could provide some relief for both teams.

I doubt the weather will have a noticeable impact on this game.

Philadelphia Eagles (-3.5) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+152), O/U 44.5

The training staff for both teams had better be ready to deal with a lot of muscle cramps. Temps are expected to be in the high 80s, but factor in the humidity, and it feels more like 95-96 degrees. Scattered thunderstorms will certainly not help (33% chance).

Winds will be relatively low, with minimal gusts also expected.

If anyone is going to have trouble, I’d expect an offensive or defensive linemen to be the most likely candidates. Heat and humidity are brutal on anyone, but a 300+ lb. guy? Yeah, he’s going to hate life by the time warmups are done.

I doubt the weather will have an impact on this game.

New York Jets (+2.5) vs. Miami Dolphins (-154), O/U 44.5

Things could change before this game kicks off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL. But if conditions don’t change, this could become our first truly bad weather game of the season.

Temps are expected to be around the low 80s to high 70s throughout the game. Winds are not expected to have an impact, but there is a 56-57% chance of rain starting with kickoff and through the end of the game.

Rainy weather can impact numerous things, especially if the rain turns out to be as heavy as expected. If it is, don’t expect too many deep passes and look for the run games to be dominant. Ball carriers will hug the ball a little closer to keep from fumbling.

Of all the games, I’d expect the weather to have a potential impact on this one.

I’d have leaned toward the UNDER anyway, but with the chance that this is a soggy, wet day, I like the UNDER even more.
