What is a Progressive Slot?

Progressive jackpot slots have dynamic payouts, which means the value of their top prize increases until a predetermined stopping point.

That stopping point is when someone hits a winning combination of symbols and scoops the jackpot. After that, the jackpot counter resets to a seed amount (aka a starting value), and the process begins again. 

Prizes aren’t fixed because a small percentage of every bet goes into a communal prizepool. This creates a constant influx of money that pushes progressive jackpots to values unmatched by fixed-payout slots. 

All progressive jackpot slots are powered by communal contributions, but the ways in which money goes into the prizepool differ. I’ll explain how different types of jackpot slots work in the next section. 

To summarize, the value of a progressive jackpot increases until it’s won. A percentage of each player’s bets makes this possible, but the way in which prizepools are formed depends on the type of online progressive jackpot slot machine you’re playing. Now that’s clear, let’s look at how the online progressive jackpot slots work.

Types of Progressive Slots

There are four main types of progressive jackpot slots online. Networked and local are the most common. However, in recent years, must-drop and cross-game jackpots have become popular at the top US online casinos.

Networked Progressive Jackpots

Networked jackpots can be applied to one or more games. Their defining feature is that they span multiple online casinos. For example, Mega Moolah is available at hundreds of online casinos worldwide.

Being available at multiple online casinos means that millions of players contribute to the prizepool. This, in turn, results in record payouts exceeding $20 million.

Local Progressive Jackpots

Local progressive jackpots are confined to a single online casino or group of casinos operating under the same parent company. They’re sometimes referred to as in-house jackpots.

Because they’re restricted to a small number of sites, local jackpots tend to be smaller than networked jackpots. That’s because there are fewer players putting money into the pot. 

However, even though the payouts are smaller, local progressive jackpots can still be worth upwards of $100,000 and, in some cases, over $1 million.

Must-Drop Jackpots

Some progressive jackpot slots are more predictable than others. The most predictable progressive slots online are known as must-drop games. They’re so-called because the jackpots must drop (hit) on or before a predetermined point.

The must-drop point is based on cash value or time interval. For example, BetMGM’s Must Go Jackpot slots, including Moon Spell and Serpent King, are programmed to release their top prize randomly every 24 hours.

Cross-Game Jackpots

Cross-game progressive jackpots are a relatively new addition to the genre. As the name suggests, a single progressive jackpot is spread across multiple games. By games, I don’t just mean slots. 

These jackpots are applied to a variety of casino games, including slots, blackjack, and roulette. The best example of a cross-game progressive jackpot is Age of the Gods. This popular Playtech series encompasses various slots and roulette games.

My Best Progressive Jackpot Slot Games

The best online progressive jackpot slots are part of larger networks. I’m not saying all of the best casino slots are attached to major networks. In fact, as I’ll explain at the end of this section, there are some highly entertaining slots connected to smaller networks.

However, in general, the best progressive jackpot slots online offer the biggest prizes. To offer the biggest prizes, slots need to be part of these global networks:

1. WowPot Mega

Mega Moolah often grabs the headlines because it’s paid out more than 75% of the biggest progressive jackpots in history. However, when it comes to the pound-for-pound king, WowPot is, to date, unsurpassed.

Created by Microgaming but now part of Games Global, WowPot Mega progressive jackpot slots have a $2 million seed. That used to be twice the size of its closest competitor (Mega Moolah), and enough to make slots such as Sisters of Oz major players in the jackpot game.

Aside from the seed amount, the appeal of WowPot slots lies in their four progressive jackpots. Once you’ve triggered the jackpot bonus game, you’ll spin a prize wheel for prizes often worth more than $10 million.

In fact, one lucky player won a record-breaking $42 million in 2023 after hitting the top payout in the Wheel of Wishes WowPot slot.

2. Mega Moolah

The eponymous hero of this network is Mega Moolah. Released in 2006, at the height of the online casino gaming boom, Mega Moolah blazed a trail. Even today, despite its somewhat tired design, Mega Moolah remains a fan favorite and continues to set records.

Such is its appeal, Games Global has turned Mega Moolah into a progressive jackpot network that now includes a variety of spinoffs, including Immortal Romance Mega Moolah. Each spinoff has its own theme and features, but the underlying jackpot mechanics are the same.

That means the jackpot game can be triggered on any spin, regardless of the amount you wager. Your chance of triggering the jackpot game increases slightly based on the size of your wager, but I’m not suggesting you up your bet just to chase a progressive payout.

The top progressive jackpot previously had a $1 million seed amount, but that was upped to $2 million in 2025. According to Casino Listing’s stat tracker, Mega Moolah releases its riches, on average, once every eight days.

3. MegaJackpots

IGT is known as one of the leading slot providers in the world, so it’s no surprise that it’s made waves in the progressive jackpot with its MegaJackpots network.

Initially used for progressive jackpot slot machines in land-based casinos across the US, MegaJackpots now links some of the top online slots, including Elephant King.

The seed amount for MegaJackpots slots is $500,000, so you don’t see as many $1 million+ payouts as you do on other networks. However, it’s one of the most widely known jackpot networks, which means it has paid out prizes worth more than $7 million in the past.

4. Jackpot King

Jackpot King is one of the longest-running progressive jackpot slot networks online. Part of Blueprint Gaming’s empire, this network adds extra firepower to popular slots such as King Kong Cash, Fishin’ Frenzy, and Deal or No Deal.

Like its peers, Jackpot King has multiple progressive payouts: Regal, Royal, and Jackpot King. The smallest has a seed amount of $500, so you often find that Jackpot King slots have payouts within the $100,000 to $900,000 range. That being said, I’ve seen slots connected to this network with $1 million jackpots numerous times.

Five crowns starts the jackpot mini-game, at which point a prize ticker replaces the gameboard. The prize ticker contains a combination of prize multipliers and the aforementioned jackpots. Whichever symbol the ticker stops on is what you win.

5. Age of the Gods

The final network worth mentioning is Playtech’s Age of the Gods franchise. There are four progressive jackpots - Power, Extra Power, Super Power, and Ultimate Power - and the biggest has a $100,000 seed value. 

Although that’s at the lower end of the seed value spectrum, Age of the Gods is unique in the fact that its jackpots are applied to different games. As I mentioned earlier, you can win any of the four jackpots playing Age of the Gods slots and roulette. That’s why it’s one of my favorite jackpot networks.
