Arsenal Must Deal With the Pressure of Being Title Favorites

We are still relatively early in the campaign, but Arsenal are in pole position to win the Premier League title. Having finished as runners-up for three seasons in a row, Mikel Arteta's men now look ready to scale the mountain. A first championship crown since 2004 could be headed to north London this term.

There is no doubt that Arsenal are the best team in the division right now; they might even be the strongest side in Europe. No Premier League team has conceded as few goals up to now, while Arsenal rank joint-top for goals scored. The best online sportsbooks have them down as clear favorites to finish first.

Their latest statement of intent was issued in the north London derby last weekend. Arsenal crushed their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Spurs did not give a good account of themselves, but that was in part because of how good their opponents were. It was Arsenal's standout performance of the season up to this point.

This is a side that can win matches in different ways. Arsenal played some lovely soccer in the triumph over Tottenham. Previously they have emerged victorious thanks to a combination of defensive solidity and set-piece prowess. Arsenal can both outplay and outfight their rivals.

A six-point lead at the summit of the standings means the Gunners are in a good place right now. Their fellow title competitors all look flawed. Perhaps the only thing that can beat Arsenal is Arsenal themselves.

Indeed, Arteta and his players must deal with the pressure that will be placed on them in the weeks and months ahead. This group has never won a trophy together. If their form dips at any point, they will need to show they can come through the other side.

Chelsea Aiming to Prove They Are Capable of Challenging at Top

For all the focus on Liverpool and Manchester City, it is Chelsea who are Arsenal's closest challengers heading into the weekend. That might not last, with City expected to bounce back soon, but the table as it stands shows Chelsea second, six points behind Arsenal.

It is hard to work out what should be expected of the Blues. On the one hand, they have the youngest squad in the division and have gone through a period of transition in recent years, with new owners and a change of direction. On the other hand, those owners have spent vast sums of money to assemble the squad at Maresca's disposal.

A top-two finish, you feel, would be universally recognized as a solid achievement. There is a long way to go and Chelsea may end up dropping off, but they will be pleased with where they are right now. It is clear that, compared to the beginning of 2025, progress has been made.

That is not to say Chelsea have been perfect. There have been blips along the way, the most recent of which was a 1-0 home defeat by Sunderland. But Chelsea have beaten Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and they rank second for goals scored. It should be remembered, too, that they have been without several key defenders as well as Cole Palmer, their star player.

Chelsea’s most recent league triumph was not pretty, but the grit and resolve they showed in a 2-0 win against Burnley last weekend bodes well for the remainder of the campaign.

“It was a tough game for many reasons,” Maresca said afterwards. “Again, after the international break, 12 o’clock, Burnley away, this type of pitch.

“Also, we need to manage players, so it was a very tricky game, and the way the players compete, again, another clean sheet. I don’t think they had one important chance in the second half. Overall, I think we deserve to win the game and we are happy.”

The Biggest Game of Premier League Weekend Should Deliver

Second against first, a London derby… there is no doubt that this is the standout fixture of the Premier League weekend. We are still only in November, but this is the sort of match that, in hindsight, could be picked out as having had a big influence on the title race.

An Arsenal win would move them nine points clear of Chelsea. Assuming Manchester City beat Fulham on Saturday, it would also restore their seven-point cushion above Pep Guardiola's men. A victory for Chelsea, however, would narrow the gap between them and Arsenal to a mere three points. A home win would blow the title race wide open, and a draw would allow City to close the gap.

The latter outcome is what we anticipate. Chelsea are a difficult team to play against at Stamford Bridge, so they will cause Arsenal a few problems. But Arteta's team is made of stern stuff. They will be able to stand up to any threat posed to them by Chelsea.

All things considered, we can see this being a hard-fought, engaging score draw - the sort of result that would not overly disappoint either manager.
