Liverpool began the Premier League campaign as favorites to win the title and nothing we have seen so far has altered their status. After five rounds of fixtures, they are the only team to boast a 100 percent record. With 15 points out of 15, Liverpool are looking down on the rest of the division from top spot in the table.
Yet while the results have been perfect, the performances have not. Liverpool relied on late winners to beat Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Burnley. Four of their victories, including the one over Everton last weekend, have been by a one-goal margin. A goal difference of +6 shows they have not been entirely dominant up to now.
Is that a good thing? There are two ways of looking at it. The positive interpretation argues that Liverpool’s ability to win even when they are not operating at their top level is a worrying sign for the rest of the league. Once they get back to their best, Liverpool will be even more dangerous.
Others would contend that the Reds will be caught out sooner rather than later. It is unsustainable to rely on so many winning goals towards the end of matches. In their view, the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City should be able to catch up with Liverpool provided those teams do not fluff their own lines.
As ever, the truth probably lies somewhere in between those two viewpoints. For now, though, there is no doubt that Liverpool are the team to beat in the Premier League. It is still early days, but the reigning champions look well positioned to retain their championship crown. All things considered, Slot could not have asked for a better start to his second season in the Anfield dugout.

Crystal Palace beat West Ham United 2-1 in their fifth game of the Premier League season. They are the only other team unbeaten alongside Liverpool. In fact, Palace have now gone 17 games without defeat in all competitions. The Palace fan base has never had it so good.
Oliver Glasner is the main reason for that. The former Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt manager has done an extraordinary job at Selhurst Park. First he rescued Palace from the threat of relegation. Then he won the club its first major trophy in the form of the FA Cup, qualifying Palace for Europe in the process.
Glasner's team have been particularly impressive away from home. Since the beginning of December last year, they have collected more points at opposition grounds than any other Premier League team. You read that correctly - Palace have outdone even Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool on enemy territory over the last nine months.
Glasner has lost some key players in that time. Michael Olise departed in the summer of 2024. Ebere Eze followed 12 months later. Yet Palace have only gone from strength to strength. Their recruitment has generally been excellent, but Glasner deserves credit for the way he has developed the players he has worked with in south London.
“It was a deserved win,” the Palace boss said after the victory over West Ham. “We have to be careful because we are really in a great run. Maybe the only criticism is that we didn't kill the game when we could kill it. This is a little bit the story of this season until now. On the other side it's good, we're still unbeaten, we have the second away win, so it's all on track.”

Given they have already played Arsenal, Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid this season, it might seem far-fetched to say this could be Liverpool’s toughest assignment to date. Yet given Palace’s long unbeaten run, that is perhaps not a hyperbolic statement.
Remember, too, that Liverpool have already faced Palace in 2025/26 - and they came off second best at Wembley Stadium. The two teams played out a 2-2 draw in the Community Shield, but Palace held their nerve in the shootout to win on penalties.
Glasner's team showed on that occasion that they are capable of hanging with superior opponents, staying in the game and eventually finding a way back into it. That is what makes Palace such awkward opponents. Liverpool, who were held to a draw by Glasner’s side in their last league meeting, should be wary of that.
Yet the Reds have managed to find a way so far this season, and they could do the same here. Palace will not make it easy for the champions, but Liverpool have more individual quality at their disposal and that should make the difference.
We expect a tight encounter at Selhurst Park, so do not expect Liverpool to run riot. Palace should be able to hold their own in the opening 45 minutes, but Liverpool could take the match away from them by winning the second half.
