Manchester City Will Give Title Race Everything They Have Got

Manchester City have a renewed level of confidence after what has been a positive February so far. Back-to-back victories over Liverpool and Fulham saw them close the gap to Arsenal in the Premier League title race. Those wins, together with the Gunners’ 1-1 draw with Brentford, saw the latter’s lead drop to four points.

It is more than that now. In a match brought forward from the final of the EFL Cup weekend, Arsenal could only manage to draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday. That increased their advantage once more, but it was a poor result against the bottom team in the league.

So, the state of play: Arsenal are five points clear of Manchester City, but the latter have played one match fewer. That means the championship race is alive and well. Success against Crystal Palace in their game in hand would see City narrow the deficit to one. And remember, Arsenal must still visit the Etihad Stadium later in the campaign. All else being equal, a home win there would put City one point shy of the summit of the standings.

There will doubtless be more twists and turns before the conclusion of the campaign in late May. Take this weekend as an example. Arsenal face a potential banana skin in the form of an away game against a Tottenham Hotspur side under new management. City, for their part, host a Newcastle United team that can match anyone in the league on their day.

No matter what happens in the 12 rounds of fixtures that remain, one thing is for sure: neither Arsenal nor Manchester City will give up on the title without a fight.

Newcastle United Should Target European Football This Term

Newcastle United have had to scale down their ambitions for the remainder of the season. In fact, they may soon turn their focus to the Champions League and the FA Cup (they will face Manchester City in the fifth round of the latter competition).

That is because the Magpies are now highly unlikely to achieve their principal goal of qualifying for next season's Champions League, for which a top-five finish in the Premier League is likely to be sufficient. Tenth in the table at the time of writing, Eddie Howe’s team are nine points behind fifth spot. That gap will be almost impossible to overturn at this stage of proceedings.

That is not to say the rest of the Premier League season is insignificant for Newcastle. Psychologically, a sixth-place finish is patently preferable to 12th spot. It is also important that Newcastle qualify for one form of European soccer, even if a seat at the top table is bound to be beyond them.

The next few months could define Howe's future. The Newcastle head coach retains the backing of most match-going fans. But a poor end to the season would probably see some of those supporters reluctantly conclude that things had gone stale at St James' Park. Of course, there is also the possibility that Howe himself could seek pastures new.

Uncertainty abounds, but a positive run of form over the next few weeks would leave everyone associated with the club feeling much better. Over to you, Newcastle.

Manchester City Must Keep Pressure on Arsenal in Title Tussle

Despite one or two wobbles of late, Arsenal are still favorites for the Premier League title. They have been the best team in the division so far this season and have a deeper roster than City, which should allow them to balance their various commitments at the business end of the season.

Yet given their experience and knowhow - not to mention the considerable quality available to Guardiola - Manchester City are very much in the conversation. They must ensure they keep the pressure on Arsenal for as long as possible. If they can hang in there, always within a few points of top spot, City will be ready to take advantage of any further slip-ups from Mikel Arteta's men.

With City playing the day before Arsenal this weekend, they have an opportunity to turn the heat on their title rivals. They will almost certainly take it. Newcastle are 10th in the table for a reason: they have not been going enough this season. They have been particularly disappointing away from home, so City will be confident of victory here.

The hosts should make a fast start, which is why we are backing them to hold a lead when the two teams head into the locker rooms after 45 minutes.

City boast, by some distance, the best first-half record in the league in 2025/26. They have been ahead at the break 17 times out of 26 and behind just twice. Tip City to be ahead at half-time again this weekend as they aim to make life as difficult as possible for Arsenal in what could yet be a thrilling Premier League title race.
