Last weekend brought Ruben Amorim’s best result as Manchester United manager. The Portuguese has had a difficult first year at Old Trafford, with United seemingly stuck in their long-time malaise. But a 2-1 victory over Liverpool was just the fillip Amorim needed. Now United must build on it.
Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors to Anfield ahead early on, finishing coolly with his weaker right foot. United then succeeded in holding Liverpool at arm’s length for the rest of the first half. The Reds pushed hard after the break and eventually got their equalizer through Cody Gakpo. But there was still another piece of drama to come, as Harry Maguire nodded home in the 84th minute to send the away fans delirious.
It was United's first triumph at Anfield for almost a decade. They deserved it too. True, Liverpool probably created more chances on the day. But United were disciplined and diligent without the ball, and incisive and brave with it. Of course they gave up a few opportunities along the way, but United's performance gave them the best possible chance of victory.
Remarkably, it was the first time in Amorim’s entire tenure that United have won back-to-back Premier League matches, having beaten Sunderland immediately prior to the October international break. Suddenly things are starting to look a lot brighter. For one, United are out of the bottom half. They now trail Liverpool - the champions, no less - by just two points.
Yet there have been too many false dawns before. On countless occasions in the recent past United have believed they have turned a corner, only to realize it was into a cul-de-sac. A defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion would leave Amorim back at square one.
Still, the success against Liverpool means United fans will arrive at Old Trafford on Saturday with a newfound sense of optimism. The Red Devils must harness that and ensure the momentum is not lost.

Brighton & Hove Albion are ticking over nicely. It is no longer noteworthy to see the Seagulls in the top half of the Premier League table - and that is the biggest compliment you can pay to one of the most well-run clubs in English soccer.
It is worth remembering that Brighton's present spell in the top flight is their first since the early 1980s. This is their ninth consecutive campaign at the highest level and relegation is of no concern to the side from the south coast. Instead, European qualification is the objective.
Brighton beat Newcastle United 2-1 last time out, as a brace from the evergreen Danny Welbeck got them over the line. Fabian Hurzeler’s charges have now gone four league games unbeaten, and won five of their last six. That run includes meetings with Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle - four teams competing in the Champions League this term.
There is still room for improvement, of course. Brighton have won just one of their four away games, and that success against Chelsea was in large part down to the fact the Blues were reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute. Their 1-0 lead then turned into a 3-1 deficit as Brighton capitalized on their numerical advantage.
Having said that, the vast majority of the club's fan base will be pleased with the start they have made to the season. Brighton are not competing in Europe this term and their clearer schedule could give them an edge in the race for a top-seven finish. For a club outside the elite, they also have a roster with decent strength in depth. Write Brighton off at your peril.

Brighton have had plenty of joy at Old Trafford in recent years. They won 3-1 there last season, 3-1 the campaign before, and 2-1 the year prior to that. Each of those triumphs came under a different manager: Graham Potter first, then Roberto De Zerbi, then Hurzeler.
Manchester United should not underestimate the challenge posed by Brighton, then. They are an excellent side on their day, and with victories over Manchester City and Chelsea already this season, the Seagulls have shown themselves to be well suited to playing the top teams.
But for the first time in a while, United have something substantial to build on. The home crowd will be well up for this match and the players should thrive on that.
What is more, the underlying numbers throughout this season make for pretty positive reading for United, who rank a respectable six for expected goals difference. In terms of expected goals created, only Crystal Palace have done better.
United are not out of the woods yet and a win here would not guarantee a successful season. Nevertheless, we expect them to edge this duel with Brighton. Go for a home victory.
