After a convincing 3-0 victory over Liverpool immediately prior to the recent international break, Manchester City have established themselves as Arsenal’s most likely challengers for the Premier League title. The gap between the pair stands at four points heading into the weekend, and although Arsenal are rightly considered favourites given their lead, City should not be written off.
By their high standards, last season was a disaster for City. A third-place finish was respectable, but Guardiola’s men fell well short of the title having won it in each of the four previous campaigns. Some wondered whether it was the start of a decline. Right now at least, it looks like it was an aberration.
City have not been perfect over the first 11 games of 2025/26. They have been beaten by Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, and even some of their wins have not been entirely convincing. But the triumph over Liverpool was hugely impressive, even when you take the Reds’s malaise into account.
City were much the better team against the champions. They played some excellent football and also outmuscled Liverpool, who turned in a tame display at the Etihad Stadium. Arsenal have the meanest defence in the division, but City have scored more goals than anyone else, thanks largely to Erling Haaland. Their prolific attack could yet fire them to the title.
“The team has a good vibe,” Guardiola said after the defeat of Liverpool, which was his 1000th game as manager. “We had energy. We lost energy last season, I don’t know why.
“In October and November, you don’t win the Premier League. The team that wins is the one that grows. You can be top but you have to be better and better. We talk about that a lot. We have the feeling we are in that way. We are back in many things.”

Newcastle United have had a strange start to the season. Three wins in their first four Champions League games has put them in a strong position midway through the league phase. Newcastle are also through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, a competition they won in 2024/25.
However, Eddie Howe’s team are struggling to get going in the Premier League. They sit 14th at the time of writing, and although there is still plenty of time to turn things around, Newcastle have underwhelmed up to now. Their away form has been particularly poor: only Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers have collected fewer points on their travels.
Newcastle have been better at St James’ Park, but three wins and two defeats at home is not enough to make up for their shortcomings on rival soil. Howe is struggling to find the solutions and some fans are starting to wonder whether the ex-Bournemouth head coach has taken the club as far as he can. Others contend - and it is a convincing argument - that Howe has been let down by his superiors.
Whatever the truth, Newcastle need to get out of this rut. Their performances in the Champions League show what Howe’s men are capable of, but they have been mediocre at best in run-of-the-mill Premier League encounters. That is a concern.
"We haven't done our jobs and we feel we have let everybody down,” Howe said after a 3-1 loss to Brentford immediately prior to the international break. “When you do that, when you make mistakes, it's not intentional from anyone. All you can do is hold your hands up and go: 'Right, let's try and fix it.' That's what we are going to try and do."

Newcastle had a difficult summer, losing Alexander Isak and missing out on some of their transfer targets, so perhaps it is no surprise that they have had a disappointing start to the season.
The Magpies also struggled for consistency in the early part of 2025/26, before coming good after Christmas. It should not be all doom and gloom, particularly as Newcastle are doing well in other competitions.
As far as this fixture is concerned, however, Manchester City are the best bet. Guardiola's men have the bit between their teeth. City have rediscovered their mojo, and while this group may not be quite as imperious as previous iterations, they are arguably more flexible.
Newcastle’s supporters will be up for this match and Howe’s team often raise their game for the big occasion. The table does not lie, though, and it is clear that City are a much better team than Newcastle at the moment.
Follow the form book and go for an away win when Newcastle host Manchester City this weekend as the Premier League season resumes after the final international break of 2025.
