Arsenal Where They Want to Be but Still Too Close for Comfort

It has been a tough fortnight for Arsenal. After beating Sunderland the weekend before last, the Gunners moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table. The title was theirs to lose, especially if Liverpool could do them a favor against Manchester City the following day.

They almost did. The Reds were 1-0 heading into the closing stages at Anfield, but City dug deep and struck twice late on to turn the match on its head. At the end of the campaign, we may look back on that as the moment the title was won and lost.

That is because, all of a sudden, City’s fate is in their own hands. They built on that Liverpool success by beating Fulham a few days later. Arsenal have played two league games since then without winning either. Draws with Brentford (1-1) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-2) have dealt a blow to their championship chances.

City are now five points behind Arsenal. They have a game in hand on their title rivals, against Crystal Palace. They also know that Arsenal still have to visit the Etihad Stadium in April. If City win every game from now until the conclusion of the campaign, they will be champions.

The same applies to Arsenal, though, and it is important that they do not despair. Yes, the draw with Wolves was immensely frustrating, as Arsenal threw away a 2-0 lead against the worst team in the league. But they are still where they want to be: top of the Premier League with a five-point advantage over the chasing pack.

“I think we need to go through the pain and you need to go through that looking in the mirror and understanding what the game requires now and the next action is on Sunday,” Arteta said on Wednesday. Now Arsenal must respond.

Tudor Takes Charge as Tottenham Aim to Pull Clear of Danger

It is all change at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium once more. Thomas Frank was sacked following his side’s defeat by Newcastle United last time out. He can have no complaints: Spurs are 16th in the table and in genuine danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

Enter Igor Tudor. An appointment out of the left-field, it is a move which appears to make sense. Some have held up Tudor’s lack of Premier League experience as a problem, but that did not stop Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp or Jose Mourinho being successful in their first jobs in England.

More relevant is Tudor’s record of making an instant impact at most of the clubs he has managed. That is what Tottenham need right now. Tudor may not be the man for the long run, but he has what it takes to shake things up immediately. Spurs fans will hope he can jolt the side into life.

No one would argue this is a vintage Tottenham team, yet they should not be 16th in the league. There is enough quality within that locker room to challenge for a top-half finish. If Tudor can galvanize the player he has inherited, Spurs should begin to climb the table.

That is not to say they should take the threat of demolition lightly. As things stand Tottenham are just five points above the dreaded dotted line. Relegation should be unthinkable for a club of their size and means, but it is not unless they get more points on the board. Over to you, Igor.

Tottenham Would Dearly Love to Dent Arsenal’s Title Ambitions

Tottenham Hotspur fans would love nothing more than getting one over on their arch-rivals and denting their title prospects. But Spurs need a result for their own reasons too. A defeat this weekend would leave them in danger of dropping even closer to the bottom three, and then things would really get jittery. A win, on the other hand, would give them some much-needed breathing space.

One worry for Arsenal at the moment is how poorly they are finishing games. They threw away leads against both Brentford and Wolves, dropping four crucial points in the process. It is a damaging habit they must fix as quickly as possible if they want to win the title. Champions are renowned for their ability to score late goals, not concede them.

Provided there is no psychological hangover from the disappointment of Wednesday, Arsenal will probably start this game well. They are a better team than Tottenham and their quality should shine through early on, even if they are put under pressure as the match grows older.

We recommend backing the Gunners to win the first half. What happens next is anyone’s guess, but from a betting perspective that is the best choice. Arsenal have a solid first-half record - only Manchester City are outperforming them in that regard - and we should see more evidence of that when they renew hostilities with their north London rivals.
