My +180 Pick for Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea

Back Tottenham Hotspur to beat Chelsea this weekend. Spurs do not have the best overall record against their London rivals, but Thomas Frank can guide them to victory here.

Tottenham Hotspur Under Frank Remain a Work in Progress

Tottenham Hotspur won the Europa League last season, claiming their first piece of silverware since 2008. The night of the final was one of the best in Tottenham’s recent history, as Ange Postecoglou oversaw a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao.

The problem was, Tottenham also finished 17th in the Premier League last term. That was a dire showing for a club that had been targeting Champions League qualification via the top flight. Despite their continental glory, Spurs parted ways with Postecoglou in the summer.

The club chose Thomas Frank as his replacement. The Dane had helped Brentford punch above their weight over a number of years. His appointment also represented a stylistic shift for Spurs. Postecoglou is an idealist and a dogmatist. Frank is a much more pragmatic tactician, able and willing to adapt his strategy depending on the opponent and situation in front of him.

Frank has had a broadly positive start to his tenure, although there is still room for improvement. Spurs are harder to play against and sturdier defensively. Their new-found steel is evidenced by the fact they have claimed four more points than any other team in the division.

On the flip side Tottenham have had difficulties against teams that are happy to give them the ball. They rank a lowly 17th in the Premier League’s home table, having won just one of four assignments in front of their own fans. Spurs have at times lacked guile and creativity in those situations.

Overall, though, Frank will be pleased with the way things are going. Tottenham should not have finished 17th last season, but they did. The fact they now look like genuine top-four contenders is credit to Frank, although a man of his experience will know there is still a long way to go.

Consistency Continues to Elude Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea Team

Chelsea’s search for consistency goes on. Just when it looks like the Blues are starting to get it together, they take a step back. Enzo Maresca's men beat the defending champions Liverpool earlier this month, yet last weekend saw them lose 2-1 at home to Sunderland.

Chelsea could not have any complaints. They took an early lead against the Premier League’s surprise package, but Sunderland equalized midway through the first half. Chelsea had plenty of possession in the second period, but they did not do enough with it. They then suffered a late sucker punch when Sunderland struck in stoppage time.

Chelsea’s roster is the youngest in the Premier League (Sunderland’s, incidentally, is second and Tottenham’s is third). There has also been a high turnover of players over the last few summers. With those two facts in mind, perhaps it is inevitable that Chelsea are not the most reliable side around.

When they are at their best, the west Londoners can compete with anyone in the league. But they drop too many silly points to be title contenders. Unless they address that shortcoming, Chelsea will struggle to remain within touching distance of Arsenal in top spot.

Success in the Conference League and the Club World Cup last summer eased some of the pressure on Maresca, but expectations are high at Stamford Bridge and treading water this term would not be enough to satisfy the Chelsea fan base. Maresca, who rubbed some supporters up the wrong way in his debut season, is well aware of that.

“If you want to be up there you need the consistency,” Maresca said last weekend. “We won four in a row and [against Sunderland] we could have shown that, but because we lost points we didn’t show that.”

This Intriguing London Derby Really Could Go Either Way

This is a difficult game to call. In recent times, Chelsea have generally had the upper hand in head-to-head meetings between this pair. They have won each of their last four games against Tottenham, as well as nine of the last 11. Spurs have one victory in the last 17.

That is a pitiful record, but it is one that Tottenham have the chance to slightly improve this weekend. Frank’s team have been mediocre at home so far this season, but they should have more joy against a team like Chelsea who will take the ball and allow Spurs to play a more reactive form of soccer.

This one could go either way. A Chelsea triumph would not be a huge surprise, and a draw is possible too. But Tottenham look like a more streetwise team than Chelsea at the moment, and that could make the difference.

Both teams will probably be in and around the top four this term, so the results in matches like this one will be crucial. Tottenham have the chance to make a statement of intent here, and we expect them to grasp that opportunity with both hands. Go for a Spurs victory when they renew hostilities with Chelsea on Saturday.
