On Tuesday, Barstool Sports founder David Portnoy announced via Twitter that his company would be replacing CBS Sports as the exclusive title sponsor and broadcast partner of the Arizona Bowl.

The New York City-based digital media company, founded in 2003 in Milton, Massachusetts by Portnoy, will now live stream the Arizona Bowl on its website, app, and social media channels, promising to “cover the game in a way that is completely unique, and uniquely Barstool.”

Boasting millions of unique visitors a month, Barstool Sports already produces a daily sports-betting-themed radio show called Picks Central in addition to producing numerous podcasts and various Video on Demand content.

Despite weathering numerous controversies, Barstool Sports has managed to attract millions of followers, called ‘Stoolies,’ sports fans who also enjoy Portnoy’s brand of self-described “sports/smut.”

Known for his controversial takes and provocative content, Barstool Sports founder Portnoy went to Twitter to make his announcement and included a snarky message that made it clear he was not intimidated by this new role.

We have exclusive broadcast rights. CBS used to own it — see ya! Smell ya later! We control everything: the bowl, the broadcast, the halftime show, the national anthem. We are getting into the live sports broadcast game.

Back in 2015, the original organizers of the Arizona Bowl had made it clear that they wanted this event to use a “digitally-focused” broadcasting strategy that would provide “interactive in-game content” to fans, something that Barstool Sports is more than comfortable providing.

With college sports becoming a major emphasis to Barstool lately, they’ll get their biggest opportunity yet to entertain NCAA fans in December.
