It is possible that LIV Golf hasn’t quite got its schedule correct for its brief European Summer Swing.
There is nothing wrong with the venues: Valderrama (this week’s host) is one of the finest venues in continental Europe, and the JCB Country Club in England was very popular 12 months ago.
But next week’s British Open is a very distinct test and the heat of southern Spain is not ideal preparation.
The likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Tyrrell Hatton would probably prefer to be on the British or Irish seaside this week, honing their skills on bouncy, contoured fairways and greens.
That said, Valderrama is in Sotogrande, and it is a wonderful place to spend a week.
The golf is good, the scenery is wonderful, the food is sensational, and the hotels are exceptional.
There’s a very good spa, too, and many of the players might need it because Valderrama is tough, and has been known to fry many a golfing brain.
This week’s picks need to be tough and used to a Robert Jones Sr. examination.
It is a par-72 that plays to 7,533 yards
It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.
The fairways are famously tight and tree-lined
The greens have bent grass on them
Scoring tends to be very tough
Sergio Garcia is a four-time winner on the course
The two-time US Open champion now owns a fine record in all three of the US majors, but he still struggles to play the British Open. He said after last year’s woes that he would be looking to appropriately prepare in the future. Quite what he makes of having to play a tight, tree-lined Valderrama, then, is an interesting question. He was second there in 2023, however.

LIV Golf’s Mr. Consistency (he is yet to finish outside the top 10 in any LIV event) has also got a fine record on Trent Jones Sr. designs: he’s 6-for-8 at ending the week top 10 on them, but perhaps beware. Why so? Well, he’s only 2-for-4 at Valderrama. There’s also a chance that he has an eye on next week’s British Open.

The Englishman made his Valderrama debut 12 months ago and impressed with rounds of 72-68-69 for third place. He got off to a slow start at the RTJ Club in LIV Golf Virginia but closed with rounds of 69-65 for T15. Since then he has been fourth in the US Open and fifth at LIV Golf Dallas. He’s yet another with an eye on next week’s final major of the year

At the start of last month, the Chilean Joaquin Niemann won LIV Golf Virginia at the Robert Trent Jones Club which is a pretty big clue given this week’s course designer.
Moreover, it came off the back of two top 10s at Valderrama.
That victory was his fourth LIV win of the year - a figure is four times Rahm, DeChambeau, and Tyrrell Hatton combined.
All three are either shorter, or the same price, as him this week and maybe they shouldn’t be?
The clincher is that while that trio will all hope to be contenders in next week’s Open, Niemann continues to underwhelm in them and has not played well on the linksland.
This is another week for him to pounce on a circuit that suits him.
Back him each way with Caesars Sportsbook offering +800.

You might want to just back Sergio Garcia outright.
He’s the defending champion and has won on the course four times.
But winning back-to-back is difficult, and he’s short in price.
So instead we’re going to look at the raw numbers.
Garcia has played Valderrama 17 times and guess what?
He’s finished top 10 on no less than 16 of those occasions.
That is remarkable consistency, and it is testament to his fondness for the test and the suitability of his game.
Keep it simple and take the +135 for another top 10 with bet365.

The Kiwi Ben Campbell is relatively new to LIV.
He played a few times last year as a substitute before becoming a rookie in 2025.
At the start of last month, he thrashed a final round 62 at the RTJ Club that was the equal low round of the day.
It was another reminder that he likes Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs.
For example, he won at Royal Dar es Salam in Morocco last July and, when he defended last week, he was T22 (with a second round score only three players in the field bettered).
Royal Dar, like Valderrama, is cork tree-lined and tight.
Don’t discount that Campbell is also a winner at Hong Kong GC - another spot many Valderrama winners have thrived at.
The First Round Leader market offers five places and Campbell should be backed at +5000 with BetMGM.
