Best MLB Bets Today May 31

Young Mariners’ starter Bryce Miller will be making his return from the IL tonight to take on the Twins. He’s been unable to recapture his form from his 2024 breakout season, though an elbow injury hasn’t helped. We’ll share why we like him to have a rocky return tonight, as well as two other bets that we love.

The odds we use are taken from Caesars Sportsbook. If you’d like to try Caesars, use promo code WSNDYW to claim a “Bet $1, Get Ten 100% Profit Boost Tokens” offer.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM EST)

Run Line Spread Moneyline Total
Reds +1.5 (-165) +135 Over 7.5 (-105)
Cubs -1.5 (+140) -160 Under 7.5 (-115)

PICK: Over 7.5 (-105) at Caesars Sportsbook

These NL Central rivals will be facing off for the second weekend in a row. In fact, tonight’s starters faced off on Sunday, meaning we’ll see an almost identical matchup to start today’s game. The Cubs went on to win 11-8, and we expect to see a similar shootout tonight.

Reds’ starter Nick Lodolo (4-4, 3.39 ERA, 1.10) is enjoying the best season of his career. His WHIP and ERA are greatly improved over the last year, helping to round out a sneaky-great rotation.

Lodolo wasn’t terrible against the Cubs, but he allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He got lucky when the Cubs stranded some runners, but don’t count on that happening again tonight. Look for the lefty to get in trouble early before turning things over to a bullpen that allowed Chicago to score seven runs last weekend.

Cubs’ starter Ben Brown (3-3, 6.39 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) is struggling to keep runners off the basepaths. He’s been able to work around that issue for much of the season, but the wheels have come off over his last two starts. He’s allowed a whopping 14 runs on 14 hits and two walks over a combined nine innings.

The Reds tagged Brown for eight runs last night, giving us all the confidence we need to lock in this over.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Philadelphia Phillies (4:05 PM EST)

Run Line Spread Moneyline Total
Brewers +1.5 (-140) +158 Over 8.5 (+100)
Phillies -1.5 (+118) -190 Under 8.5 (-120)

PICK: Brewers ML (+158) at Caesars Sportsbook

This matchup features two hot teams, but we see the Brew Crew pulling off the upset this afternoon.

There are two reasons why we are locking this bet in today. The first is the Brewers' play at the plate, which has been improving late in May. Sal Frelick continues to come up with key hits, while former MLB MVP Christian Yelich seems to finally be settling in, with a .962 OPS over the last week.

The other reason is the Phillies' bullpen, which owns the seventh-highest ERA (4.61) in the league. That means that even if Jesus Luzardo (5-0, 2.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) delivers another gem, the Phillies' lead won’t be safe for long.

Milwaukee starter Chad Patrick (2-4, 2.97 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) won’t last long in this one, but he has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts this season. He’ll be supported by a bullpen that has finally figured things out and returned to being one of the best in the league.

Minnesota Twins vs. Seattle Mariners (7:15 PM EST)

Run Line Spread Moneyline Total
Twins +1.5 (-125) +180 Over 7.5 (-110)
Mariners -1.5 (+105) -220 Under 7.5 (-110)

PICK: Twins ML (+180) at Caesars Sportsbook

We’ve been backing Bailey Ober (4-1, 3.41 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) over the last month, and it's paid off in a big way. The Twins have won seven of the righty’s previous eight starts, thanks to Ober holding teams to just one run in all but two starts since April 1. We expect him to keep the impressive run going tonight against a Mariners team that is batting .191 over 47 at-bats against him.

Seattle starter Bryce Miller (2-4, 5.22 ERA, 1.54 WHIP) has struggled to replicate his incredible 2024 campaign. One reason for that may have been an elbow injury, which put him on the IL over the last couple of weeks. He’ll be making his return tonight, but time will tell the kind of toll the injury took.

The Twins' lineup has not been good at the plate over the last week and has been wildly inconsistent all season. However, they have some talented bats that will have a great chance to snap their slumps with Miller on the mound tonight.

Miller will be facing Minnesota for the first time since June 2024. He wasn’t great, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings, resulting in a 5-1 loss.
