The Commanders allowed the fewest points of any team in Week 1 against the New York Giants (six)
The Packers routed the Detroit Lions as Micah Parsons got a sack in his team debut
Odds to win the NFC list the Packers second and Commanders fifth
The Green Bay Packers will welcome the Washington Commanders into town on Thursday Night Football in a matchup between two of the most exciting teams in the conference.
While the season has only just begun, both teams are making strong cases that they can still be playing during conference championship weekend. The Commanders routed the New York Giants, 21-6, while the Packers dismantled one of the conference’s dominant powers, the Detroit Lions, 27-13, in Week 1.
The NFL schedulemakers didn’t disappoint with their early-season primetime matchups. Here are my thoughts and best bets for the Commanders vs. Packers showdown on Thursday Night Football.

Teams | Moneyline | Spread | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Washington Commanders | +150 | -3.0 (+100) | Over 48.5 (-110) |
Green Bay Packers | -180 | +3.0 (-120) | Under 48.5 (-110) |
My Pick: Commanders +3.0 (+100) at bet365
This has all of the makings of a great game, albeit one that could play out in a variety of ways. Both teams have the running game to play a slower, methodical style of football, and both defenses were outstanding in Week 1.
At the same time, both head coaches have enough faith in their quarterbacks to turn the safety off and let them sling the ball all over the field. Neither would consider its secondary the strength of its team, yet both should be expected to face game-deciding tests on Thursday night.
Washington was outstanding on fourth down last year and is able to cover the spread while still losing by a field goal. That makes them a great pick to cover, even if they have to burst through the back door to do it.

Jayden Daniels has already earned a reputation as one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. He didn’t play his best in Week 1, though he still went for 301 total yards, a touchdown, and no turnovers.
There were several major headlines from the team’s Week 1 win against the Giants, but none bigger than the play of the defensive line. They generated the fifth-most pressures of the week despite only blitzing on slightly over one-fourth of their pass-rush reps, while also holding the G-Men to 74 rushing yards on 3.2 yards per carry.
The Commanders’ offensive line also allowed the third-lowest pressure rate despite facing an outstanding defensive line. Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt racked up 82 yards on only 10 carries as part of a 220-yard rushing performance from the offense.
Daniels still holds the key to this franchise, but the early returns show that they have made substantial improvements elsewhere on the roster, particularly on defense. Jordan Love and company should expect a steady dose of pressure and man-blitzes, putting pressure on Marshon Lattimore, Trey Amos, and Mike Sainristil isolated on the back end.

The Packers have taken a high-floor approach to building their team, which is still the youngest in the league. They marked their official intent to compete for a Super Bowl by acquiring Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys, although a back injury limited him to 30 snaps in Week 1.
This year’s Packers team has a level of physicality that was missing from previous iterations. They still have their trademark explosiveness with Love and their speedy receivers, as well as a steady running game, but they can bully their opponents at the point of attack. That much was made clear in their season-opening victory against the Lions.
Ball security is going to be at a premium not only in this game, but in all of the Packers’ high-profile matchups. They’re only 6-11 since 2023 when Love throws an interception, compared to 14-5 when he doesn’t. For added context, he went 16/22 for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 1 victory, while the Commanders tied for the fourth-fewest interceptions in the league in 2024.
Green Bay’s utilization of its defensive assets is also worth tracking. Players such as Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper give them speed in the middle of the field, though the Commanders’ willingness to spread them out and play no-huddle will test their discipline and coverage instincts.
