Tottenham Hotspur Need a Win to Pull Clear of Trouble

When Tottenham Hotspur finished 17th in the Premier League, it was supposed to be a one-off. That disappointment was mitigated by the team's triumph in the Europa League, which ended a 17-year trophy drought, but their poor showing domestically meant Ange Postecoglou was sacked at the end of the campaign.

The way things are going, Thomas Frank might not last that long. He too has fared well in Europe, guiding Spurs to a top-eight finish in the league phase of the Champions League to secure their direct passage to the round of 16. But like Postecoglou, things are not going well in the bread and butter that is the Premier League.

A 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Saturday has left Tottenham in the lowly position of 15th. Their hopes of finishing in the top five are over. Instead, some at Spurs are worried about being dragged into a relegation battle, with West Ham United in 18th now just six points behind their London rivals.

Demotion sounds unthinkable and Tottenham should have enough quality to avoid it, but the fact it is even being mentioned as a possibility does not reflect well on anyone associated with the club. It would be a danger, too, for Spurs to think they are too good to turn down. Their form, which has seen them win one of their last 10 league outings, suggests that is not the case.

Tottenham’s defeat at Old Trafford last time out was particularly frustrating. It was an even game until the half-hour mark, when Cristian Romero was sent off for a characteristically brainless tackle. It was the sort of ill discipline that Spurs cannot afford in their current predicament.

“The resilience, staying in the game mentality, still being a threat at times trying to create something - [I'm] very proud of them,” Frank said afterwards, trying to put a positive spin on things. But the Dane knows he is under huge pressure.

Newcastle United Continue to Be Dogged by Inconsistency

Newcastle United are not enjoying themselves right now either. They are not as low in the standings as their upcoming opponents, but Newcastle are also in the bottom half of the table. A 3-2 defeat by Brentford at the weekend has left their Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with fifth-placed Chelsea now 14 points above them. It would take a miracle for Newcastle to close that gap.

Like Tottenham, the Magpies are doing reasonably well in the Champions League. They fell just short of a top-eight finish last month, but delivered a creditable performance against Paris Saint-Germain on matchday eight. However, there has been little to cheer in the league all season long.

Newcastle have been hamstrung by inconsistency. Their longest unbeaten streak this term is four games, which is simply not good enough for a side with their aspirations. Newcastle’s away form is poor and they have lost too many home games too, including that reverse to Brentford. There is even talk that Eddie Howe's job could be under threat.

“The type of pressure is irrelevant to me," the manager said on Saturday. "When you're in this job, you're always in that moment, whether it's pressure to win and keep winning or pressure to turn around results. We're very much in that feeling.

“I always say the pressure I put on myself couldn't be more extreme because I demand really high standards from what I'm doing, how I work, and what I ask the players to do. I'm obviously not doing my job well enough at the moment.”

Tottenham Hotspur Can Take a Giant Step Towards Safety

Tottenham Hotspur probably need three more victories to make sure of Premier League safety, and we reckon there is a good chance they will get one on Tuesday. Certainly, at the odds available with the best online sportsbooks, it is worth backing the home team to come out on top.

That is not because Tottenham are a particularly good side, but they have shown one or two signs of life of late. A stirring comeback in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City the weekend before last was impressive, and Spurs held their own against an in-form Manchester United team on Saturday until Romero's red card.

Newcastle are not in a good place and their away record makes for difficult reading. Only Leeds United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers have accumulated fewer points on their travels in 2025/26.

Sure, Tottenham are just as bad at home as Newcastle are away, but Frank's men have tended to struggle against low defensive blocks. Newcastle will adopt a more proactive approach here, and that could play into Tottenham’s hands.

The north Londoners are waiting for a moment to transform their campaign. A win on Tuesday would not necessarily do that, but it would ease Tottenham’s relegation fears for now. As for Newcastle, this could be yet another disappointing match away from St James' Park.
