The 2024 WNBA season has not gotten the kind of start Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever had hoped for. However, while they are 0-3, the season has just begun. There's plenty of time to get things turned around—starting with tonight's rematch vs. the Connecticut Sun at home.
While the Sun had a relatively easy time taking care of the Fever in their season opener last week, Connecticut would be wise not to take Caitlin Clark and the Fever lightly.
Even though Saturday's rematch vs. the Liberty ended in another defeat, it wasn't a total loss. After not putting up much of a fight in their first two games of the season, they were competitive in this one.
Now, they were never really a threat to win and were down by 20 at the half, 57-37. But then they outscored New York in the second half, 43-34.
But was it an isolated incident, or can they do it again? Let's look at the betting odds for the game, and we'll share our pick for Sun vs. Fever.
Bettors needed something from Caitlin Clark and the Fever on Saturday after suffering through the season's first two games. While the Fever remained winless at the end of the game, the night was not a total loss for those with money on the game— New York failed to cover the spread.
Indiana recorded its first ATS win of the season! For the first time this season, the OVER also won (1-2).
The road has not been nearly as challenging for the Sun. Other than their win over the Fever in the season opener, Connecticut has played just one other game, an 84-77 victory over the Washington Mystics. However, while they did what matters most (won), they failed to cover the spread (-8.5).
When the Sun and Fever met in the season opener, Connecticut was a 6.5-point home favorite, and the over/under was 166.6. So, while they easily covered the spread, the OVER did not win.
Here's the betting line for Monday's Sun vs. Fever game with odds from DraftKings Sportsbook where new users can Get a No Sweat First Bet up to $1,500:
Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Connecticut Storm | -4.5 (-105) | -112 | O 163.5 (-112) |
Indiana Fever | +4.5 (-115) | +154 | U 163.5 (-108) |
After such a dominant win over the Fever in the opener, fans were likely eager to see the Sun take on a rebuilding team like the Washington Mystics in the next game. It should be an easy win for a team clicking on all cylinders, right? But it wasn't.
The game had a tied score at the half, and the Sun were down four heading into the final quarter—where Connecticut finally took over. A 15-0 run put them ahead; a 32-21 fourth quarter secured the win. DeWanna Bonner led the way with 22 points on 9-19 shooting (0-6 from three-point range).
Dijonai Carrington added 21 and Alyssa Thomas recorded a double-double (11 rebounds, 13 points).
Their defense against the Mystics was solid, and the offense was not bad (42.6% from the field). Similar efforts could be enough for the Sun to start the season 3-0. However, if Connecticut struggles from three-point range again (2-10 vs. Mystics) and Caitlin Clark heats up, it could be a long day for the Sun.
Bet on Connecticut Sun at DraftKings
The struggle has been real for Indiana after two demoralizing losses to start the season. But things took a huge step in the right direction with the loss to the Liberty in New York over the weekend. Caitlin Clark was more involved and shot better (9-17 from the floor; 4-10 from three-point range).
Kelsey Mitchell bounced back from her lackluster performance in the opener to score 17 (7-18 from the floor; 3-8 from three-point range. Aliyah Boston chipped in 12 points to go with seven rebounds. However, while Clark's shot was better and she had a solid day, turnovers were an issue again (8).
A young, up-and-coming, talented team like the Fever will have growing pains. Players need time to play together and gel. That's certainly hard to do with just a couple of preseason games. It takes time. If Saturday's effort against New York is any indication, Clark and the rest of the Fever are learning.
But can they stay on track and move forward against one of the best defensive teams in the league?
Bet on Indiana Fever at DraftKings
Fans should expect a better game from Caitlin Clark and the Fever, but they may want to temper their expectations. Connecticut has a talented, veteran corps that has played together for the last few years. They don't have the "getting to know you" learning curve that the Fever has to deal with.
Because of that, while it will be a more competitive game, the Sun will improve to 3-0 when the day is done.
