The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature an unprecedented 48 teams, organized into 12 groups of four teams (Groups A through L). The Final Draw is a meticulous process governed by a set of rules to ensure competitive balance and adhere to geographical constraints.
The 48 participating teams (or qualifying slots) are divided into four pots, each containing 12 entries, based primarily on the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking.
Pot 1: Features the three host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the United States—plus the nine highest-ranked qualified teams.
Pots 2 & 3: Contain the next 24 qualified nations, ranked by their FIFA World Ranking.
Pot 4: Includes the lowest-ranked qualified nations, as well as the placeholders for the final six spots that will be won through the European Play-Offs and the Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament in March.
One team from each of the four pots will be drawn into each of the 12 groups.
Host Allocation: The three host nations are pre-assigned to their starting positions: Mexico to Group A (A1), Canada to Group B (B1), and the USA to Group D (D1).
Geographical Constraints: No group can have more than one team from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA (Europe), which will have 16 teams. Each group is allowed a maximum of two European teams.
Top Seed Protection: The top four highest-ranked teams (Spain, Argentina, France, and England) will be drawn into opposite sides of the bracket. Should they all win their respective groups, they cannot meet until the semi-finals, providing a clear structure for the tournament path.
While the draw on December 5 sets the groups, the full match schedule, including specific stadiums and kick-off times for each match, is expected to be released the following day.
