With the Texas Rangers offense failing to play at a competitive level, Hunter Brown has the opportunity to strengthen his position for the AL Cy Young award as the Houston Astros pitcher excels at avoiding contact. Before that takes place, we continue to fade the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays as both struggling lineups are set to face off against a pair of productive pitchers.

After struggling to find his footing over the past few years, Hunter Brown has seemingly hit his stride as the Houston Astros pitcher continues to climb up the oddsboard for the AL Cy Young award. In his eight starts, Brown is averaging an ERA of 1.48, a WHIP of 0.904, a FIP of 1.85, and less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched. Brown’s back end also gives him a high level of support as the Astros defense currently ranks fifth overall in Defensive Efficiency.
In a AL West divisional matchup against Texas, Brown will have a great opportunity to build his case for the AL Cy Young award as he faces off against a Rangers offense who ranks below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and in On Base Percentage. Especially with Wyatt Langford and Joc Pederson struggling to make contact at a consistent rate as both players in the top of the Rangers order average less than one Hit per game.
As for Jacob deGrom, the former Cy Young winner also draws a favorable matchup as he faces off against an Astros offense who also ranks below league average in the same previously mentioned metrics. deGrom has shown signs of his former award winning self this season as the Rangers pitcher is currently averaging an ERA of 2.72 and a WHIP of 1.023. With Houston struggling to make contact, expect deGrom to hold the Astros scoreless in the first inning.

After dealing with a nagging shoulder injury throughout the year last season, Kevin Gausman has managed to round back into form as the Toronto pitcher is averaging an FIP of 3.28, a WHIP of 0.971, and less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched. His back end providing him a high level of coverage has also helped him get off to a hot start as the Blue Jays defense ranks top-15 in Defensive Efficiency and in Fielding Percentage.
Against Tampa Bay, Gausman will have the opportunity to sustain his high level of play as he faces off against a Rays offense who ranks below league average in Contact Rate and in On Base Percentage. Especially with the Rays top of their order struggling to get into scoring position as Junior Caminero, Brandon Lowe, and Chandler Simpson all possess an OPS lower than 0.750.
On the other side of the field, Zack Littell will have the opportunity to match Gausman’s level of production as he also faces off against a Blue Jays lineup who struggles with bringing home their runners as their low mark in Total Runs Scored and RBIs indicates. Other than Vladimir Guerrero Jr, no one in the Blue Jays top of their order possesses an OPS higher than 0.750. Littell also receives support from his back end as the Rays rank fourth in Defensive Efficiency.

Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves - Trevor Williams vs. AJ Smith-Shawver - Positive regression looms large over the Atlanta Braves star studded offense as they face off against the Washington Nationals Trevor Williams who currently averages a ERA of 5.88, a WHIP of 1.573, and over one Hit Against per Inning Pitched.
Chicago White Sox vs. Cincinnati Reds - Bryse Wilson vs. Nick Martinez - Expect the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds top of their orders to open up the scoring early on in their contest as they face off against a pair of pitchers who struggle with keeping opposing runners out of scoring position while averaging over one Hit Against per Inning Pitched.
