Liverpool Have Gotten Their Top-Five Bid Back on Track

Liverpool needed that. One-nil down to Newcastle United last weekend, many of the club’s supporters must have been fearing the worst midway through the first half. It has been a difficult campaign for the Reds so far, and they went into their latest Premier League assignment on a five-game winless streak in the competition. With Chelsea and Manchester United resurgent, Liverpool could ill afford another blow to their top five chances.

Thankfully for Arne Slot, who has come under increasing pressure of late, Liverpool turned things around. A brace from Hugo Ekitike, who has been a rare bright spot for the Reds all season long, turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, before Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate made things more comfortable for the defending champions in the second half.

That tag will not belong to Liverpool for much longer. The title will not go to Anfield this season, with Arsenal and Manchester City the only two realistic contenders for the crown. Liverpool have thus had to scale down their ambitions for the campaign, but it is vital that they at least qualify for the Champions League.

There were plenty of positives to take from the Newcastle game which suggested Liverpool are moving in the right direction. After a shaky start, the Reds played with energy, dynamism and intensity. They were doubtless aided by Newcastle’s decision to try and take the game to their opponents, rather than sit in and spoil. But Liverpool still deserve credit for producing some excellent soccer on the day.

Slot knows that his team must now build on that performance, which will soon be forgotten if it is followed up by a handful of draws and defeats. Liverpool supporters will hope that the Newcastle match proves to be a turning point.

Manchester City Still in the Premier League Title Race for Now

Everything was looking good for Manchester City when the referee blew for half-time in their clash with Tottenham Hotspur last time out. Goals from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo had given them a two-goal cushion against a Spurs side whose fans were close to being in open revolt at the team and manager.

From there, it should have been a comfortable second period on the way to another three points. But it was not. City allowed Spurs back into the game, with Dominic Solanke notching a brace to bring the home team level. At 2-2, Tottenham were the likeliest winners based on the balance of play and chances created.

Thomas Frank’s team showed no shortage of character after the interval, but City were hugely disappointing. Unusually for a Guardiola side, City are really struggling to control matches from start to finish. There is a vulnerability to this group and Spurs were just the latest opponents to take advantage of it.

Having said that, it would be premature to rule City out of the title race. A six-point deficit to Arsenal is surmountable with so much soccer still to be played. Remember, too, that Mikel Arteta’s men still need to visit the Etihad Stadium. Right now, though, there is little doubt who the best team in England are.

“We are playing at a high level,” Guardiola said after the 2-2 draw, trying to put a positive spin on City’s situation. “We didn’t have the consistency to win the games when others were able to do it, Fourteen games [left] is a lot of games. Six points. Next one.”

Home Advantage Could Be Decisive for Liverpool on Sunday

Liverpool and Manchester City served up some classic games when Jurgen Klopp was in one dugout and Guardiola was in the other. Those matches were perhaps the highest quality we have ever seen in the Premier League era. Neither Liverpool nor City are at the same level today as they were back then.

That does not mean we will not be treated to an entertaining encounter on Sunday, however. Both Liverpool and City are flawed, but that might actually make for an even more absorbing contest. With the two teams struggling to control matches, we should see plenty of chances at either end of the field.

Most of these City players have been to Anfield numerous times before, so they will not be fazed by the prospect of facing the Reds in front of their fans. Yet the home crowd can still play a decisive role here. To get the most out of that backing, Liverpool must play at a high tempo for as long as they can.

We saw City fail to deal with Tottenham when the latter increased the speed of their play, and they could be undone in similar circumstances here. Liverpool have struggled against low defensive blocks this term, but they are still capable of going toe to toe with anyone in the division. In some ways, they are better suited to playing another top team than they are to facing a side battling against relegation.

City will doubtless have their moments on Sunday, but we favor a Liverpool victory in this clash of the Premier League titans.
