Michael Carrick could not have asked for a better start to his Manchester United tenure. Despite facing Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham in his first three games at the helm, the former midfielder has guided United to three wins. From the doom and gloom of the Ruben Amorim era, a sense of optimism has crept back in at Old Trafford - and Carrick is the man responsible.
United were terrific against both City and Arsenal. They dominated the former, winning 2-0 in front of their own supporters, and while the Arsenal game was more even, it was hard to begrudge United their success. Fulham arguably tested the Red Devils more than either City or Arsenal, coming from 2-0 down to tie things up at 2-2 in second-half stoppage time.
But United are in a positive groove right now and they were not to be denied. Benjamin Sesko, who has had a tricky debut campaign in Manchester, came off the bench to score the winner in dramatic fashion. It was a goal which moved United back into the top four, with Aston Villa in third place now just five points ahead of Carrick’s men.
Carrick is in the honeymoon phase. That will not last forever. United are bound to be tested again soon, perhaps by Tottenham Hotspur this weekend. Still, Carrick has breathed new life into their season. With United out of every other competition, they only have one thing to focus on. That could work in their favor as their rivals for the Champions League (Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool) divide their attention between multiple competitions.
“There's got to be excitement. We want people to come in with that passion, looking for something to happen and be excited by it,” Carrick said after the 3-2 defeat of Fulham. “The supporters have gone home happy and looking forward to the next one. But we're not getting too far ahead of ourselves.”

Things were looking pretty bleak for Thomas Frank midway through last weekend’s clash with Manchester City. Tottenham Hotspur were 2-0 down and were struggling to stay in the game. Worse still, a feeling of apathy had descended on the stadium. Their fans were so disgruntled that they could barely bother to boo the team.
At that point, it seemed a question of how many goals City would get. Instead, Tottenham dug deep to produce a much-improved display after the interval. Of course, there was understandably considerable focus on the extent of City’s collapse, which bodes ill for their title chances. But Spurs showed character and resilience as they upped the tempo and tied the match at 2-2.
Will it prove to be a turning point? Frank certainly hopes so. He has had a tough start to his Tottenham career. His team is doing well in the Champions League, but the Premier League has mainly brought disappointment. Indeed, Spurs head into the weekend just nine points clear of the relegation zone. The top five and Champions League qualification is already out of reach.
Performances have also been a problem. Spurs have regularly played dull, reactive soccer. That sort of style does not go down well with a fan base that likes to see its team play on the front foot. But if Tottenham can perform against Manchester United as they did against City, they could be onto something.
“First and foremost I am extremely proud of the players and the character and mentality they have shown,” Frank said. “I am so happy that they, and we, got something out of it. And a well deserved point. I think there was a moment in the second half where we could have scored the third goal.”

Tottenham Hotspur have been better on their travels than they have been at home this term. Despite their broader struggles under Frank, only two teams have collected more points at opposition stadiums than Spurs. That should give them hope at Old Trafford.
Dig a little deeper, though, and Tottenham’s recent record makes for less positive reading. In their last six away games, they have emerged victorious just once. In that period Spurs rank a mediocre 14th in the away table.
Manchester United, for their part, are a team on the up. Confidence in the camp is high and they will look to make a fast start here. The evidence points to United winning the first half, which is our betting recommendation for Saturday’s early kick-off.
Only Manchester City and Arsenal have better first-half records than United in 2025/26. Even under Amorim, the Red Devils tended to get out of the blocks quickly. In 12 home games, they have held a lead at the interval seven times.
As for Tottenham, we saw last weekend that they have a tendency to take a while to get going. It would not be at all surprising if United were in the lead with 45 minutes on the clock.
