The Commanders have allowed seven passing touchdowns over their last three games.
Jayden Daniels is expected to return from a knee injury that’s kept him out of the past two games.
Keenan Allen has amassed over 60 receiving yards and a touchdown in three straight games.
Among the appealing matchups on the Week 5 NFL schedule is an interconference game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Washington Commanders. The Chargers are fresh off their first loss of the season, a surprising defeat at the hands of the Giants. They immediately play another NFC North team, as they host the Washington Commanders, who lost to the Falcons last week, with Jayden Daniels missing his second straight game because of a knee injury.
After suffering a loss last week, the Chargers’ standing as the AFC West favorites is a little more tenuous than it was after their 3-0 start. Likewise, the injury to Daniels isn’t helping Washington’s odds of winning the NFC East. Nevertheless, both the Chargers and Commanders are relevant when looking at the Super Bowl odds, making this an intriguing matchup.
The betting spread for this game is tight, especially with some uncertainty over the health of Daniels. That’s why the best approach is to target player props for this matchup. We’ve picked out our three favorite player props for the Chargers-Commanders game.
The odds for these bets are from bet365 Sportsbook, which has one of the best selections of player props and is giving new customers a chance to claim $200 in bonus bets after making an initial wager of just $5.
Herbert has had a rough couple of weeks. He’s thrown just two total touchdowns over the last two weeks, completing less than 60% of his passes in both games. Injuries to the offensive line in front of him aren’t likely to help him. But he’s still a quarterback you expect to throw multiple touchdowns most weeks, and the Washington defense is the type of defense to give them up.
Outside of Russell Wilson in Week 1, every quarterback facing the Washington defense has thrown at least two touchdown passes. Keep in mind that those quarterbacks have been Jordan Love, Geno Smith, and Michael Penix Jr. If those quarterbacks can find success against the Washington defense, Herbert should have no problem getting back on track and throwing multiple touchdown passes.

The good news for the Commanders is that Daniels is trending toward playing in Week 5 after missing two games with a knee injury. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to (literally) hit the ground running upon his return. It remains to be seen if the injury could hamper Daniels’ ability to make plays with his legs. It would also be wise for him to run a little less after the injury.
Even a healthy Daniels isn’t a lock to rush for at least 45 yards. In week 2, he was limited to just 17 rushing yards on seven carries. There were also eight games last season when he failed to reach that threshold. While the Chargers have been hurt by rushing quarterbacks this season, they held Bo Nix to just 33 rushing yards two weeks ago. Jim Harbaugh will also be eager to take away Daniels’ legs and force him to beat the Chargers with his arm.

Both Allen and Quentin Johnston are good bets to go over their expected total for receiving yards in this game. As mentioned, the Commanders have had a world of trouble defending the pass this season. Bigger receivers like Allen and Johnston have given them the most trouble, but since Allen has a lower threshold, he’s the smarter option.
Surprisingly, the Giants in Week 1 were the best at keeping Allen in check. However, he’s responded with three straight games with over 60 receiving yards and a touchdown. Allen has become a consistent part of the Los Angeles offense. Plus, Allen has received double-digit targets in two of the last three weeks, so he and Herbert are clearly on the same page.
