Saquon Barkley won the Offensive Player of the Year award last season
Barkley generated a total of 84 yards of offense in week one’s matchup against Dallas
The Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line ranked below league average in PFF Grade
It was a quiet debut for Saquon Barkley as the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year award winner generated just 84 yards of total offense in week one’s contest against the lowly Dallas Cowboys. With his offensive line struggling to hold their ground, Barkley is forced to run into low-quality rushing lanes which hurts his chances of moving the ball down the field.

Heading into the year, it was rumored Saquon Barkley would see a decrease in his total number of carries in order to preserve him for another run at the Super Bowl. That was apparent in week one as Barkley was held to just 18 total attempts. The Eagles' trading for Tank Bigsby also validates the rumors as he will be expected to receive a minor share in the total number of carries as well.
To make matters worse for Barkley, negative regression has already reared its ugly head over his offensive line as the Eagles finished week one ranked below league average in PFF Grade. Their inability to get a push off the line drastically lessens the quality of Barkley’s rushing lanes which hurts his ability to generate yards after contact in the trenches.

The Eagles' struggles in pass protection also lessens the time Jalen Hurts has in the pocket to let his wideouts create separation from the Chiefs' coverage, forcing him to either dump it off to Barkley or take off and run. Barkley showed how effective he can be in the Eagles' pass attack in week one as he finished the contest hauling in four receptions for 24 yards.
From a schematic standpoint, Barkley will continue to find himself open against Kansas City as the Chiefs rely on just their front four to generate a majority of their pressure as their low Blitz Rate indicates. With their linebackers anchored in coverage, this opens up the flats for Barkley to exploit. When in the open field, Barkley will have a great opportunity to generate chunks of yards at a time and clear the total on his receiving yardage prop.

As previously mentioned, the Chiefs' tendency to anchor their linebackers across the middle will potentially lead to an uptick in Barkley’s targets which increases his chances of generating an explosive play. Especially when Barkley is one of the best open field runners in the league as he possesses an elite blend of strength and maneuverability.
The Chiefs' secondary will also be stretched out thin in their efforts of covering the Eagles' deep group of pass catchers which will open up wider running lanes for Barkley to exploit. Especially when they have to spy Jalen Hurts in order to stop him from scrambling, leaving the Chiefs prone to getting beat on the outside should Barkley slip away from pressure.

When in scoring position, Barkley has continued to be the Eagles' main source of offense as he finished week one with a 100% usage rate. With the Chiefs' defense ranking below league average in Def DVOA, expect the Eagles to get into the red zone at a high rate which increases Barkley’s chances of punching one in.
