It seems fans and media wanted to talk about everyone BUT the Tennessee Volunteers in the 2026 NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Region.
The team finished fifth in the SEC and suffered an early exit from the conference tournament, ending a good season in an unremarkable way. While the team still punched its ticket on Selection Sunday, they were matched up against a Miami (Ohio) team that went 31-0 during the regular season.
That made Tennessee a popular pick to lose in the Round of 64, relegating the team to afterthought status for most fans. While they easily won the game, the team hasn't been overlooked in its next two games.
Instead of allowing those predictions to become reality, the Volunteers shut off all the noise and focused on themselves. As a result, they now find themselves facing off against #1 Michigan for a spot in the Final Four.
Before we get into more details, be sure to check up on the latest NCAA Tournament odds and favorites.

There was plenty of drama during the Round of 64, but one of the loudest statements came from the Volunteers.
Tennessee opened the tournament with a 22-point win over #11 Miami (OH). They dominated from the starting whistle, with the RedHawks unable to find a way to score against the SEC’s top scoring defense. While the win got plenty of national attention, the focus was more on Miami's failure, which entered the game with a ton of confidence.
The victory set up a Round of 32 matchup with #3 Virginia, which finished the regular season ranked in the top ten in the country. It was a thrilling game that was tied with less than two minutes left, but the Volunteers stood tall to deliver a 79-72 win.
The win against the Cavaliers drew more attention, but there was little talk about Tennessee’s future, with a matchup against a great Iowa State team looming.
The biggest reason for Tennessee still flying under the radar heading into the Sweet 16 was the region’s top two seeds. Top-seeded Michigan was looking like a national champion, while #2 Iowa State was dominating opponents. This had led to a lot of excitement for a potential Elite 8 matchup between the two, but Tennessee refused to let that happen.
The Volunteers surprised a lot of people by taking a one-point lead into the locker room against the Cyclones. However, that surprise turned to shock as the nation watched Tennessee outscore Iowa State 42-29 in the second half. Efficient shooting, rebounding, and elite defense led them to victory, earning them a shot to make this year’s Final Four.
While Tennessee captured our attention with its win on Friday, it didn’t lead to much change with college basketball analysts and the best March Madness betting sites.
The team will enter their Elite 8 matchup against Michigan as a +7.5-point underdog and at +270 to win at Caesars Sportsbook. Those prices aren’t expected to change much as the public continues to view the Wolverines as an overwhelming favorite.
The countless March Madness podcasts and TV shows have also been heavy on Michigan entering this matchup. While they have put more respect on Tennessee’s name, the belief is that the Wolverines are destined to play in this year’s championship game.
These doubts are nothing new for the Volunteers, who continue to thrive as an afterthought in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Their win against the Cyclones will give this underdog even more confidence that it can compete with the nation’s best teams. Combine that with their proven defensive prowess, and you get a recipe for a Final Four team.
Don’t agree? Good, that’s exactly what this Tennessee Volunteer Team wants.
