Gronkowski, Brady and TB Buccaneers - Betting Odds & Predictions

Written by: Mike Lukas

Well, it’s unfolding in Tampa Bay just as many football experts have been predicting (hoping?) it would – the second the Buccaneers signed free agent GOAT quarterback Tom Brady in the offseason, the speculation began as to whether retired future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski would join him.

Speculation over – as of late Wednesday afternoon, the Gronk and the GOAT have reunited, and now it will be up to Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians to make the best of arguably the best QB-TE tandem in the history of professional football.

Here we take a quick look at how the oddsmakers have predicted it will turn out for Brady, Gronkowski, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2020 NFL season and what this mind-blowing reunion could mean for both of these veteran players and the Bucs.

Exactly How Did it Come to this?

WSN has already covered the first part of this incredible story in “Tampa Bay Buccaneers Win the Tom Brady Lottery“.

But in a nutshell, after the 2019 season, six-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady ended his two-decade reign under center with the New England Patriots and finally became a free agent.

After much mystery and conjecture, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Brady, and immediately all football eyes turned towards his favorite (and recently retired) on-field target, future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The huge question then became – would Gronk be willing to put an end to his new retirement-based lifestyle to give the NFL grind another go with the greatest quarterback of all time?

Turns out the answer is a resounding YES!

What Are the Terms of the Gronkowski Trade to Tampa?

Gronkowski was still a New England Patriot when he retired, so when he un-retired it was up the Pats to handle his contract.

In return for Gronk and a seventh-round pick in the upcoming draft, the Patriots will receive a fourth-round pick, though it still has not been determined if that will be the Bucs’ pick number 117 or 139.

Reportedly Gronkowski has already taken and passed his physical for Tampa Bay, so now it will just be a matter of ironing out the paperwork.

How Good Are the GOAT and Gronk Together?

In short – the pair is electric, with Gronkowski owning the record for catching the most touchdown passes from Brady (78), which is almost double the number of what the next in line, Randy Moss, caught from him (39).

Though there are a few historic dynamic NFL quarterback / tight end duos still ahead of them (Manning / Harrison, Rivers / Gates, Young / Rice, Marion / Clayton), Brady and Gronk could still catch them now that they have a new life together in Tampa.

And if you compare Gronkowski’s (relatively) mediocre 2018 numbers with all the tight ends of Tampa in 2019, he still automatically becomes the best at that position on the team.

So now that Brady and Gronk are reunited, the football gambling world rejoices because that opens up a whole new set of prop bets that are going to be fun to place money on.

Good luck!

Though the 42-year old Tom Brady did not necessarily look old last season, he looked relatively ineffective, but that can mostly be blamed on the lack of legitimate targets that the Patriots had on their roster for him to throw to.

Now in Tampa, not only will Brady have Gronk as a target, he gets to throw to veteran receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and tight end O.J. Howard.

The bet now is whether Brady can throw over 4,200 yards (he’s done that eight times) and 30 touchdown passes (he’s done that seven times) now that he has plenty of talented hands to throw towards.

Brady as the 2020 NFL MVP?

Brady has been selected and the NFL’s most valuable player three times in his twenty-year career – in 2007, 2010, and 2017.

With the amount of talent now surrounding him (especially if Tampa’s front office can effectively use the draft and free agency to make sure Brady has a front line to protect him) this seems like an opportunity for him to earn his fourth MVP.

The oddsmakers have him listed as the fourth most likely MVP candidate in 2020 behind KC’s Patrick Mahomes, Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, and Seattle’s Russell Wilson.

Check out the full breakdown of the predictions and odds for the 2020 NFL MVP.

Gronk-Related Prop Bets

It will be fun to see how effective Brady and Gronk are together (especially without their old head coach Bill Belichick cracking the whip over their head) and the oddsmakers have released

The odds for Gronk’s total receiving yards (675.5) and touchdown passes (5).

Gronkowski has gone over both of those totals six times in his nine-year NFL career.

Gronk as Comeback Player of the Year

Gronkowski is also now the favorite potential NFL comeback player of the year, with slightly better odds than the now healthy Ben Roethlisberger and the J.J. Watt.

Winner DraftKings
Rob Gronkowski +200
Ben Roethlisberger +500
J.J Watt +500

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2020 Prop Bets

All last season, the complaint about the Bucs was that they were a decent quarterback away from winning more games and making the playoffs.

Now that they have the GOAT and the Gronk, the team that went 7-9 in 2019 and ended up in third place of the NFC South is now the third most likely NFC team to make it to the Super Bowl LV behind the San Francisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints.

Can the Bucs win more than 10 games in 2020 with Brady under center and Gronk running routes and gaining yards after the catch?

Can the Bucs make the playoffs for the first time since 2007?

Here are those odds:

NFC Championship 2020/2021 Odds

Winner DraftKings
SF 49ers +450

Gronk responds to Brady’s Conch Call

And finally, if you don’t believe these two GOATs are totally psyched up about this reunion, look no further than this hilarious post on Tom Brady’s Instagram page for proof.

The quick clip starts with Brady ceremoniously blowing into a Conch shell (shouldn’t that be a Gronk shell?), then there’s a quick cut to a flock of birds in a tree responding loudly to the call, and finally a shot of a winded Gronkowski running from out of the woods towards Brady.

Then, bent with his hands on his knew, the unretired tight end tells his longtime friend and quarterbacking buddy, “A little tired, but Gronk reporting.”
