It may not have the best field but in terms of visuals, the Bank of Utah Championship definitely stands out.
The Black Desert Golf Course in Ivins, Utah, is quite a spectacle.
The red rock cliffs of Greater Zion form a striking backdrop for the course that was cut through a lava field.
The layout itself has wide, lush fairways and measures in at just over 7,400 yards.
A par 71, it only opened in 2022 and was the last course designed by Tom Weiskopf (assisted by Phil Smith) before he sadly passed away.
In keeping with other Weiskopf designs, it also has a pair of drivable par 4s - the 5th and the 14th.
With players having plenty of room off the tee and huge putting surfaces, several players hit every fairway and every green in regulation last year.
Winner Matt McCarty didn’t have a bunch of desert form but he was a Scottsdale, Arizona resident used to playing in such conditions.
| Year | Champion, nationality, winning score and venue |
|---|---|
| 2024 | Matt McCarthy (United States) -23 |
The par 71 is 7,421 yards but will player shorter due to being at altitude
The wide fairways and huge greens both feature bentgrass
A total of 50 yards have been added to the Tom Weiskopf design this year
Adam Svensson shot a 60 in the opening round in 2024
The weather forecast suggests light winds so scoring should be low
In the last few months, Alex Noren has won the British Masters and prestigious BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, finished third in the Wyndham Championship and been vice-captain for a triumphant Europe in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. Could it get much better? Actually it could as the Swede is still looking for a first win on the PGA TOUR. With his putter red hot and a modest list of rivals, this has to represent a great chance. At 17th in the OWGR, he’s the highest-ranked player in the field this week.

Fifth at Memorial in June, McNealy has been a model of consistency since, posting seven finishes of 28th or better in his last eight starts. The highlight was third at the BMW Championship in Maryland. He’s a first-timer here but McNealy ranks 19th for SG: Total this season and 21st for SG: Putting. He’s also in the top 15 for Total Birdies.

The 24-year-old from Ohio continues to shine brightly and convince us that he’s a future superstar. A runner-up at the 2024 John Deere Classic on just his third PGA TOUR start, he also took second place in April’s Corales Puntacana. The big finishes keep coming and Thorbjornsen followed 13th at the Procore and 29th in the Sanderson Farms with third at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan two weeks ago. A superb ball-striker, he finished 2nd for Greens In Regulation there.
We landed the winner in Japan last time as +1100 Xander Schauffele, as predicted, claimed his first win of the year.
Let’s try and follow that up by backing Christiaan Bezuidenhout who, like Alex Noren, is also chasing a first PGA TOUR title.
And although his form isn’t quite as hot as the Swede’s, Bezuidenhout is certainly knocking at the door after October finishes of 10th at the Sanderson Farms Championship followed by sixth in the Baycurrent Classic.
South Africans grew up playing plenty of events at altitude given the topography of their own country and Bezuidenhout won the 2020 South African Open at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City which is nearly 4,500 feet above sea level.
In addition, he’s also a proven performer in desert conditions
Checking back at his DP World Tour days, the 31-year-old was runner-up in both the 2019 Qatar Masters and 2020 Dubai Desert Classic.
And his joint-best finish on American soil came in the 2024 American Express - held in the California desert - when he again finished second having posted 11th the year before.
Back Bezuidenhout each-way at +3300 (1/4 Odds, 5 Places) with BetMGM.

We also landed the 72-hole match bet at the Baycurrent as Michael Thorbjornsen finished third and beat Wyndham Clark (T48) by a hefty 14 strokes.
This time I’ll take Kurt Kitayama to get the better of Jason Day.
Kitayama did well here last year, shooting rounds of 64 (R3) and 65 (R1) on the way to a top 25 finish.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise due to him being a Las Vegas resident so used to playing desert golf high above sea level.
In recent months, Kitayama has won the 3M Open, finished fifth at John Deere, ninth at St Jude and collected five top 20s in his last seven starts.
Day hasn’t been seen since August where his two finishes were 56th at St Jude and 23rd in the BMW Championship. He’d missed his previous two cuts before that.
This is also the Aussie’s course debut so Kitayama holds the aces.
Back the American to win their 72-hole match at -125 with bet365.

For a Top 10 bet, let’s try Taylor Montgomery.
Like Kitayama he’s a Vegas resident so should feel comfortable in the surroundings.
In addition, Montgomery has shown some good recent form with sixth at the Sanderson Farms on his latest start and second on the Korn Ferry’s… Utah Championship.
In fact he’s a two-time runner-up in that Utah event.
That suggests he’ll enjoy this return to the State and the PGA Tour’s 2nd-ranked putter has the form to thrive.
Take Montgomery at +650 to land a Top 10 finish with BetMGM.
