When the 2025 PGA TOUR schedule was released, there was a collective ‘what’s that?’ after reading that May would stage the Truist Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Now the time has arrived, it all makes sense.
Normally, this week would be when Quail Hollow stages the annual Wells Fargo Championship, but as the famed North Carolina course is hosting next week’s PGA Championship, a one-year fill-in was needed.
This is a Signature Event - hence a limited field of 72 - and is played on a classic course designed by A.W. Tillinghast.
With Scottie Scheffler resting after his runaway victory in last week’s CJ CUP Byron Nelson, Rory McIlroy is the clear betting favorite.
Rory may be disappointed to miss his annual assault on the silverware at Quail Hollow as he’s won four times there and we’ll see if he takes to this venue.
The good news, of course, is that he gets to play Quail Hollow again in next week’s PGA Championship and, this time, as the newest member of the Masters Green Jacket club.
As for this week’s venue, the Wissahickon at Philly Cricket Club, we do actually have some course form to look at as it staged the Senior Players Championship.
The main takeaway from that was the scoring.
Not one player broke par as Bernhard Langer took victory with 1-over.
This week it will play as a par 70 measuring just over 7,100 yards.
It features Bentgrass fairways and greens, multi-tiered putting surfaces and no less than 118 bunkers.
As for the weather forecast, there is rain predicted pre-tournament and during Friday’s second round. Temperatures are modest.
This was famed designer A.W. Tillinghast’s home course
Keith Foster undertook a restoration that was completed in 2014
The routing will be different to how the members play it
The last Tillinghast track to be used on the PGA Tour was Winged Foot
Winged Foot staged the 2020 US Open won by Bryson DeChambeau
This is Rory’s first individual start since his emotional and thrilling Masters victory although we did see him in action in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans pairs event alongside Shane Lowry a couple of weeks ago. As defending champions the Irish duo finished tied 12th, understandably running out of steam on the final day when dropping six spots. Rory will have his eye firmly on next week’s PGA Championship at one of his favorite courses so perhaps this will be more of a warm-up for him.

Justin Thomas ended a long winless streak recently and Morikawa will be hoping to do the same having not captured a PGA TOUR title since 2023. In fact, given that it came in Japan, Morikawa hasn’t won on home American soil since February 2021 - hard to believe. He went close with two runners-up finishes earlier in the season (January’s Sentry and March’s Arnold Palmer Invitational) but Morikawa has gone flat of late with 54th at the RBC Heritage and MC in the Zurich Classic pairs event.

Schauffele will be defending the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow next week and is starting to find his best again after a slow, injury-affected start to the season. In his last three starts the double Major winner has 12th at the Valspar Championship, eighth at The Masters and 18th in the RBC Heritage. He ranked in the top 20 for Strokes Gained: Tee To Green in all three and was 1st for Approach at the Valspar.

Shane Lowry, like Morikawa, is another class player looking to end a winless streak and perhaps this could be the week.
He’s been knocking at the door, finishing runner-up to Rory at Pebble Beach, and but for a poor finish at Augusta he’d have connected seven top 20s on the PGA TOUR.
Lowry ranks 4th for SG: Tee To Green, 6th for SG: Total and 11th for SG: Approach this season so this ball-striking test should be right up his street.
Beyond those basic, but highly relevant numbers, he has another couple of factors in his favor.
Philadelphia has a huge Irish community which should be out in support to cheer him on while some rain in the forecast and modest temperatures won’t hurt him one bit.
Lowry is due, so back the 2019 Open champion at +3300 with bet365 (each-way 1/4, 5 places).

US Ryder Cup skipper Keegan Bradley is always one to look at when the PGA TOUR pitches up in the North-East.
Indeed, he took victory in the 2018 BMW Championship at Aronimink the last time it visited Pennsylvania.
Note, the top five in that event were Bradley, Justin Rose, Billy Horschel, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy.
I’ll back Bradley here to outscore Sam Burns in a 72-hole match bet at -110 with bet365.
Bradley has been in good shape with fifth at Bay Hill and top 20s at THE PLAYERS Championship and the RBC Heritage, ranking 3rd for Tee To Green in the latter.
Burns has been in decent form too lately but he’s a better performer in the south and has lost strokes on approach in his last eight events.

A new course is always problematic for punters so how about leaning on some location form.
Masters runner-up Justin Rose seems to love it in Pennsylvania having won twice there (including the 2013 US Open) and finished runner-up once.
He has three top 10s this season and is worth a punt at +450 with bet365 to have another here.
