During his time as Real Madrid’s attacking midfielder, Zinedine Zidane was one of the most entertaining soccer players on the planet. The former France international used to glide through games, and his creativity and skill levels were without parallel for much of his career.

Yet even back then, Zidane knew how important balance was to a team. When Madrid sold holding midfielder Claude Makelele to make way for another galactico in the form of David Beckham, Zidane remarked: “Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?”

The Madrid team of that era was packed full of stars, including Beckham, Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Raul and Roberto Carlos, yet it underachieved in both domestic and European competition.

The same cannot be said for the Madrid side Zidane has managed in recent years, particularly on the continental stage. In his first spell in charge, the Frenchman led the club from the Spanish capital to three consecutive Champions Leagues, as well as a La Liga title. And he now looks set to win the latter competition once more, with Madrid currently two points clear of – and in much better form than – Barcelona.

Zidane’s side does not owe its position to attacking firepower alone. Madrid kept its third clean sheet in its last four games at the weekend and has conceded fewer goals than anyone else in the division. Another shut-out on Thursday looks likely.

Getafe should certainly not be written off. Its 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Monday moved it to within two points of fourth place, which is currently occupied by a Sevilla team that appears to have hit a bump in the road. Champions League qualification is a distinct possibility for Jose Bordalas’s men.

But Madrid has demonstrated its capacity to grind out results since La Liga made its return, and a fourth win to nil in the last fortnight looks like the best betting option for Thursday’s clash at the Bernabeu.

Zidane Has Made Madrid at Least Equal to the Sum of Its Parts

Madrid’s problem has never been a lack of talent. But in the aforementioned galactico era, the club signed superstars with little regard for how they might all fit into a coherent unit. That is why Madrid failed to win the Champions League and claimed only one La Liga title between 2002 and 2006, the year of Zidane’s retirement.

When the Frenchman won that competition three times as a manager in the 2010s, Madrid again had one of the strongest squads around. Yet crucial to its success was Zidane’s harnessing of the talent at his disposal.

Since the last of those triumphs in 2018, Madrid has become weaker on paper. Cristiano Ronaldo now plies his trade for Juventus, Luka Modric is past his best, Sergio Ramos is 34, and new signings such as Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard are yet to make their mark. But Zidane’s side is still – at the very least – equal to the sum of its parts, which is something that could not be said about many of the teams that have represented Madrid in recent times.

The Table Shows That Getafe Is One of the Hardest Opponents to Face

It is difficult to overstate the tremendous job Bordalas has done since taking charge at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in September 2016. In his first season at the helm, he won promotion, before securing an eighth-place finish in La Liga in 2017/18. That was followed by a fifth-place finish last time out, as Getafe missed out on the Champions League by just two points.

Many speculated that Bordalas may have taken this team as far as he could, yet it remains part of the Champions League race with six games to go in 2019/20. Only the top four have lost fewer matches this term, while Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club are the only teams to have conceded fewer goals. Taking only away games into account, only the backlines of the two Madrid clubs have been breached less often than Getafe’s.

Madrid Will Have to Work Hard to Break Getafe Down

All of which demonstrates that Madrid are unlikely to cut through Getafe at will on Thursday. Yet Zidane’s side has shown resilience and patience in recent weeks, including in its 1-0 defeat of Espanyol at the weekend. A wider margin of victory was expected given that Espanyol is bottom of the table, but Madrid ensured it remained solid at the back throughout, even if that meant scoring fewer goals at the other end.

A similar type of performance could be on display against Getafe. Madrid will have to work hard, but it should still emerge victorious.

Our Pick

Back Real Madrid to win to nil here – it will not be straightforward but los Blancos cannot afford to slip-up as the title race intensifies.
