After last week’s draw for the remainder of the tournament, some Atletico Madrid fans may have begun to turn their attention to the resumption of the Champions League next month. Diego Simeone’s side knocked out the holder, Liverpool, in the last 16 and now has a relatively favorable route to the final in Lisbon. RB Leipzig awaits in the quarter-finals, before a duel with either Atalanta or Paris Saint-Germain in the last four.
Yet even if supporters are already looking forward to next month, Simeone will be focused on the here and now. Atletico still has one game left to play in La Liga, and Sevilla’s recent run means it is still not guaranteed a top-three finish. Anyone who watched Los Colchoneros record a 2-0 victory over Getafe in midweek will have no doubts over whether or not Atletico has begun to let its thoughts drift to future competition.
It is simply not in Simeone’s nature to lose concentration, particularly as a strong end to the La Liga season will serve his team well going into the last eight of the Champions League. Atletico has rediscovered its identity in recent months, and the defeat of a dogged Getafe team on Thursday means it has now gone 15 games unbeaten in La Liga, a longer sequence than any other team in the division.
Real Sociedad has gone a rather more modest two matches without defeat, and it could really do with extending that to three this weekend. Currently, in sixth place, its two-point cushion above eighth-placed Valencia and ninth-placed Granada means a loss in the capital would put its Europa League hopes at risk.
Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad Odds

Atletico will almost certainly not end this season with La Liga’s best defensive record, a status it has grown accustomed to in recent years. Yet 26 goals conceded in 37 games is still a fantastic accomplishment, while five clean sheets since last month’s restart tell its own story.
Sociedad did win the reverse fixture in September, but that was a different Atletico back then. Even so, la Real has scored the fourth-most goals in the league this term, which means it is worth backing both teams to find the back of the net in this one.
Atletico the Mean Machine Marches on in Search of Third Place
Atletico often finds itself in an unenviable position at the start of any given season. Whenever problems are identified at either Real Madrid or Barcelona, there is hope among some members of the fan base that their team can mount a challenge for the title. If it then fails to do so, it is only natural for those fans to feel a tinge of disappointment.
Nevertheless, Atletico supporters know that this is not the norm. Before Simeone came along, a run of eight consecutive top-three finishes in La Liga would have been unthinkable. Yet that is precisely what Atletico will achieve as long as it matches Sevilla’s result against Valencia on Sunday.
Managers in the modern game have a shorter shelf life than in prior decades; we are unlikely to ever again see anything resembling Alex Ferguson’s 27-year tenure at Manchester United, or at least not at the highest level. Simeone is closing in on a decade at Atletico, though, and the club’s consistent excellence under his stewardship means it will be a very sad moment for its fans when the Argentinian one day departs.
Sociedad Left to Sweat as Patchy Form Leaves European Place Undecided
Real Sociedad would have hoped to have Europa League qualification sewn up by now. When La Liga returned in the middle of last month, it had even loftier ambitions: Imanol Alguacil’s charges were in fourth place back then and Champions League soccer looked like a very real possibility.
A draw with Osasuna followed by four successive defeats put paid to that ambition. Sociedad has rebounded to an extent, but it has still only won two of its 10 contests since the resumption. It will be more optimistic of getting over the line after its last two results – a 2-1 victory over Villarreal and a goalless draw with Sevilla – but Sociedad may be left to rely on other teams doing it a favor on the final day.
Sociedad Will Show Attacking Endeavor in Search of a Top-Seven Finish
A draw would probably be enough for Sociedad to qualify for the Europa League, and even a defeat might not matter if other results work to their advantage. But Alguacil must still show a degree of ambition at the Wanda Metropolitano, with a win the only outcome that would guarantee Sociedad a top-seven finish.
Atletico has contained better attacks than Sociedad’s in the past, but the odds available make it tempting to put some money on both teams scoring.
Take the Yes option here – Sociedad’s need to get something should help it breach an admittedly solid backline.
