The 2026 March Madness Final Will be One for the History Books

The Final Four delivered two lopsided games, with the UConn Huskies and Michigan Wolverines both cruising into the 2026 March Madness Final.

While the lack of drama left many fans disappointed, it sets us up for a historic game on Monday night.

The Huskies will enter with a chance to win their third title in the last four years. That is a feat not accomplished since UCLA’s legendary run during the 1970’s.

Michigan will be looking for its first NCAA Tournament title since its 1989 Fab Four team. The Wolverines have won each game by 13+ points, including an 18-point Final Four win against Arizona. If they can deliver another on Monday, it would complete one of the most dominant tournament runs in history.

Below, we’ll take a deeper look at how these squads aim to make their mark in the 2026 NCAA Tournament Final, setting the stage for tonight’s matchup.

Hurley’s UConn Giving Off UCLA Vibes

College basketball has grown significantly since the 1970s, but we still haven’t seen a program come close to matching the success of John Wooden’s Bruins. However, Dan Hurley’s tenure at UConn is beginning to change that.

The Huskies have become a blue-chip program over the last 30 years. They won the NCAA Tournament in 1999, 2004, 2011, and 2014, but then things started to turn.

Two years after UConn’s 2014 title, the program saw a sudden turn. They posted their first losing season in 30 years in 2016-17 and followed it up with another the following season. Attendance numbers tanked, and recruits grew wary of the Huskies, leading the school to fire championship coach Kevin Ollie.

Instead of snagging one of the league’s biggest names, UConn decided to hire Rhode Island’s Dan Hurley. His brother, former Duke legend Bobby Hurly, was capturing more national attention for his coaching success, but that wouldn’t last long.

Hurley helped reshape UConn as they worked their way back into the Big East after a short stint in the American Athletic Conference. He ended a five-year March Madness drought for the school but found little success in the postseason.

That changed in 2022, when the Huskies began a two-season run where they went 68-11 and won two consecutive tournament titles. The team took a step back after players left last season, leading to an exit in the Round of 32. While this led some to worry the program had fallen back down to Earth, the Hurley and the Huskies will have a chance to keep their dominance over the decade going tonight.

Michigan Playing at a Different Level

Heading into the 2026 NCAA Tournament, there was a consensus that the field would be fairly open. The flaws of the top seeds and the talent of the second and third had us expecting a competitive tournament.

That was largely what ended up happening, with two one-seeds being eliminated before reaching the Final Four. However, two teams were dominating their opponents over the first four rounds. After Saturday’s Final Four, only one of those squads remains: the Michigan Wolverines.

The Big Ten regular-season champions opened the tournament with a beatdown of #16 Howard, surprising no one. However, many casual fans took notice in the Round of 32, when they demolished a dangerous #9 St. Louis team, winning by 32 points. The win itself was expected, but the ease with which Michigan delivered it led online sportsbooks to make the Wolverines their new favorite.

The Elite 8 brought a tough matchup against #4 Alabama, with Michigan trailing by two points at the half. However, the upset talk was rapidly extinguished, and the Wolverines outscored the Tide 43-28 in the second half.

It would end up being the closest game the championship contender would play.

The Wolverines beat #6 Tennessee 95-62 in the Elite 8, setting up a highly-anticipated matchup against the tournament's other most dominant team: the #1 Arizona Wildcats.

Caesars Sportsbook had Michigan as a slight favorite to win, but many fans and bettors were backing Arizona to advance. It only took a few minutes to realize that wouldn’t be the case, with Michigan going up 10-1 and never looking back. This game was never close, with Michigan letting off the gas to cruise to an 18-point win.

The Wolverines will enter the March Madness Final with an average point differential of +21.6. That isn’t to the level of the 1990 UNLV Running Rebels (+26.7) or the 2001 Duke Blue Devils (+23.8), but another dominant win on Monday should secure their place as one of the most dominant tournament champions in history.
