This is the first game since the Cowboys traded Micah Parsons
The Eagles are favored to win the NFC for the second year running
The Eagles won last year’s series by a combined score of 75-13
The Philadelphia Eagles will look to begin their Super Bowl defense by hosting their NFC East rival, the Dallas Cowboys, on Thursday Night Football in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.
The Eagles ran their way to the Lombardi Trophy last year behind Saquon Barkley and a star-studded defense. The Cowboys, meanwhile, traded Micah Parsons one week before kick-off, causing their NFC Championship odds to plummet.
Let’s check out the Eagles vs. Cowboys matchup, including our favorite pick and more.

Teams | Moneyline | Spread | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Dallas Cowboys | +350 | +8 (-105) | Over 47.5 (-110) |
Philadelphia Eagles | -450 | -8 (-115) | Under 47.5 (-110) |
There are a multitude of factors working against the Cowboys in this matchup. Aside from the obvious – they just traded their best player for future picks and a player, Kenny Clark, who won’t offer an upgrade – they have questions at both head coach and quarterback.
Dak Prescott is coming off yet another season-ending leg injury and is relatively immobile at this point. He’ll be working for coach Brian Schottenheimer, a first-time head coach and the unanimous most underwhelming hire of the offseason.
The Eagles are coming off of a Super Bowl, but the best way to ensure their full mental engagement is to set them up in front of their home fans against a division rival. This is slanted heavily in favor of the Birds, who won 16 of their final 17 games last season.

The Cowboys are about to find out what life without Micah Parsons is like, and it isn’t going to be pretty. They were forced to run man coverage at a significantly higher rate when Parsons was out last year since they had to be more aggressive to try to manufacture pressure.
The man-style approach is going to be an issue against Philly’s A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. It could also leave running lanes open for Jalen Hurts and will give Saquon Barkley the opportunity to break into open space if he can break one tackle.
The Cowboys are also about to face one of the league’s best run defenses with a backfield combination of Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, and Jaydon Blue. The first two averaged fewer than four yards per carry for each of the last two seasons, and the third wasn’t one of the two best at his position on his own college team.
Even with Trevon Diggs back from his injury, Dallas’ offense and defense are both significantly outmatched.

The Eagles were a well-oiled machine coming down the stretch last year. However, there are still holes to exploit.
Saquon Barkley, in all likelihood, will not be as excellent as he was last year, when he became the ninth player to rush for at least 2,000 yards in one season. Jalen Hurts also struggled with deep middle-field passing and needs to show more confidence in his ability to further unlock the passing game.
Defensively, the Birds’ biggest challenge will be filling in their secondary. Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Andrew Mukuba are all first- or second-year players who will have the challenge of covering for whoever wins the CB2 battle, which reportedly is weighing down the entire back line.
With all that said, it’s much easier to find question marks and issues with the Cowboys than it is the world champions. Philly is physical, aggressive, and consistent, and this game should be theirs to dominate.
