NFL Weather Week 1 and Odds: It Could Get Hot in Jacksonville

Of the NFL's 32 stadiums, 20 do not have a roof, which means weather can potentially impact an NFL game if it is severe enough. It’s unlikely an NFL-focused weather forecast will impact the odds of a game, but it can encourage bettors to bet in a certain way.

Extreme heat and humidity could lead to cramping, forcing players to leave the game. High winds could impact the passing and kicking games, and heavy rain can bog down the running game and lead to turnovers.

Let’s take a look at how the weather could impact a few games in Week 1.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles, Thursday, Sept. 4 @ 8:20 p.m. EST

Cowboys+8.5 (-115)+350Over 47.5 (-110)
Eagles-8.5 (-105)-450Under 47.5 (-110)

It is expected to be nice and sunny throughout the day, but when nightfall and game time rolls around, the temperature will drop to the low 70s with a 5-25% chance of rain. Humidity is not expected to factor in, and winds will be around 7-9 mph coming out of the south.

As far as any potential impact on the game, it’s negligible at best. The temperature will be somewhat comfortable, and enough rain to potentially impact play is not expected. The wind isn’t strong enough to significantly impact passes and kicks, if at all.

Carolina Panthers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, Sunday, Sept. 7 @ 1 p.m. EST

Panthers+3.5 (-115)+154Over 46.5 (-115)
Jaguars-3.5 (-105)-184Under 46.5 (-105)

Fans in Jacksonville could be in for a messy game. There is a 10-25% chance of rain throughout the morning leading up to kickoff when the temperature is expected to reach 91 degrees with 55% humidity, making it feel closer to 100 degrees. Winds could reach up to 8 mph by the end of the game.

Working on conditioning is a part of every football player’s offseason routine, but everyone tends to need a week or two to get into ‘game shape.’ Temperatures like what’s expected in Jacksonville on Sunday could lead to cramps and dehydration, potentially forcing players to leave the game.

If the right player leaves at the wrong time, an advantage could be created.

Tennessee Titans vs. Denver Broncos, Sunday, Sept. 7 @ 4:05 p.m. EST

TeamsSpreadMoneylineTotal
Titans+7.5 (-115)+330Over 42.5 (-110)
Broncos-7.5 (-105)-420Under 42.5 (-110)

The day starts off with some rather cool temperatures and overcast conditions. But the clouds are expected to burn off by noon with temps around the high 70s. By the time kickoff rolls around, temps will still be in the high 70s with a slight wind (4 mph) out of the northwest with 50% cloud cover and a 30% chance of rain.

Temperatures could drop as low as the high 60s by the fourth quarter, with a 40% chance of rain for much of the game.

As far as any potential impact, it’s going to be a comfortable day with a light breeze and cloud cover. Rain always has the potential to cause turnovers, but forecasts are not expecting heavy rain, if any.

NFL Weather and Odds for Week 1: Conclusion

The weather is expected to be fairly good across the board in Week 1. It could get pretty hot and humid in Jacksonville, but otherwise, there’s only a little rain expected and nothing too serious. All in all, teams are getting off easy as far as the weather is concerned in Week 1.

But it’s a long season…
