On December 20, 2019, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, which enabled Michigan’s three land-based casinos as well as 12 recognized Indigenous tribes to operate online casino games. Interestingly, Whitmer was reluctant to sign the act, claiming that online slots would negatively affect Michigan’s iLottery, which had been operating since 2014.
The first online casinos weren’t launched until 2021, as it took over a year to finalize state regulations. On January 22, eight online casinos launched, alongside sportsbooks and online poker sites. The number of online casinos in operation has since grown to 15 in 2025.
Michigan now allows most major forms of online gambling, including slots, table games, video poker, bingo, and sports betting. Some forms of fantasy drafts are allowed at sites like FanDuel and DraftKings. However, in 2023, the state introduced legislation to ban the Pick’Em style of DFS (daily fantasy sports) games.
The industry has been constantly evolving since online gambling launched in Michigan. Most recently, BetMGM announced that it would allow Michigan players to combine betting pools with players from New Jersey. This interstate play will increase the player size and jackpot of betting pools and could set the stage for even more innovation in the future.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board is responsible for regulating all land-based and online gambling in the state. Their website states that the MGCB “shall ensure the conduct of fair and honest gaming to protect the interests of the citizens of the state of Michigan.”
Michigan's online casino revenue surged 24% year-over-year in January 2025, reaching $248 million. This marked the fourth consecutive month of growth, outperforming New Jersey’s $221 million and trailing only Pennsylvania’s $268 million. Unlike NJ and PA, Michigan also saw a 1.7% month-over-month increase from December.
Casinos to Avoid
There are currently 15 real money online casinos that are licensed to operate in Michigan. While US licensed casinos offer a safe playing experience, we feel that it’s also important to make you aware of casinos that are untrustworthy but still advertised as being legal in the US.
Here are four blacklisted online casino sites that players in MI should avoid:
Bovada Casino: The Michigan Gaming Control Board sent Bovada a cease-and-desist letter in 2024 for their unfair practices. The offshore casino is unlicensed, unregulated, and acts in violation of MI’s gaming control laws.
Grand Eagle Casino: In addition to operating without a valid license, Grand Eagle has received numerous complaints for its long payout times as well as unclear terms and conditions.
21 Dukes Casino: 21 Dukes regularly receives complaints about their poor customer service and payment problems. We’ll never recommend a casino that doesn’t treat its players well.
Bella Vegas Casino: This casino is known to accept players from restricted areas, which violates gambling regulations in various states. They’ve also received complaints about confiscated player winnings.
What Games Can You Play at Michigan Online Casinos?
Online casinos in Michigan offer every type of online casino game you can imagine, including slots, live dealer games, table games, and online poker, from all the best casino game providers. Here’s a list of what you can expect to see when you visit an MI online casino.
Online Slots Games
Slots are incredibly popular at Michigan online casinos, which offer over a thousand of titles to choose from. They are a great starting point for online gambling since they cater to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced players.
Unlike table games, slots require no special strategy or deeper understanding. They vary in minimum bets, jackpot sizes, bonus features, and RTP percentages, with each game featuring unique themes and designs. Some of the best slot games have low RTP and unique features, which keep players engaged and coming back for more,
Megaways slots, like Gonzo’s Quest Megaways, are a popular choice as they adjust symbol sizes to increase winning chances. Tumbling reels add another layer of excitement by dropping new symbols after a win, creating multiple chances to win on a single spin.
For a twist on traditional slots, Slingo combines elements of bingo and slot games. Players spin a reel to fill a bingo card, with exciting variations like Slingo Monopoly and Slingo Berserk offering unique themes and gameplay.
Table Games
Every real money online casino in Michigan offers a variety of classic casino table games, including blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat, and poker. Some casinos even feature Texas Hold'em or War for added variety.
With advanced 3D animation and graphics, these virtual table games bring the real casino experience to life. An off-screen dealer manages the game, and players simply click a button to start each round.
Many casinos offer multiple versions of popular table games, such as blackjack and roulette, as they partner with different software providers. These variations can differ in betting limits, jackpots, side bets, or design features.
Live Dealer Games
Live dealer casino games take the excitement of table games to the next level by featuring a real-life dealer via livestream.
These games add a social element, as players can interact with the dealer and other participants through live chat. For those who prefer a more private experience, some casinos even offer the option to reserve a personal table with an exclusive dealer.
Live dealer casinos include all the casino classics like blackjack, poker, baccarat, roulette, and craps. Some casinos also offer live versions of popular game shows, such as Wheel of Fortune or Deal or No Deal.
If you want the closest thing to a real casino experience without leaving home, live dealer games are the way to go.
Video Poker
Though often grouped with table games, video poker now has its own category at many Michigan online casinos, including BetMGM and BetRivers.
It mirrors the electronic poker machines found in land-based casinos, with some games maintaining a retro feel while others feature modern graphics and interactive elements. Players are dealt a hand, choose which cards to hold or discard, and then receive a final hand.
You’ll find various poker variants, such as Deuces Wild or Joker Poker. Evolution Gaming even introduced a live version that allows players to play up to 100 hands simultaneously.
Specialty Games
Michigan online casinos go beyond the usual slots and table games, offering unique specialty games like scratch-offs, arcade-style games, crash games, and fishing games.
For a familiar touch, some casinos feature digital versions of board games like Monopoly and Yahtzee, as well as spin-to-win games like Crazy Time and Wheel of Fortune. LuckyTap games bring an amusement park vibe, where players launch objects at a target for prizes.
You can also find Keno at select casinos like BetMGM, along with Asian-inspired games such as Sic Bo, Super Sic Bo, and Pai Gow.

You may be asked to upload a driver’s license or a recent photo or show proof of a Michigan address.
Fund your account: At a real money online casino, you’ll need to deposit funds to your account to start playing. Check out the deposit limits, which often start at a minimum of $10.
