Is Online Gambling Legal in Michigan?

Yes, online gambling has been legal in Michigan since 2019, when it became the sixth state to allow some form of online betting. 

On December 20, 2019, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, which enabled Michigan’s three land-based casinos as well as 12 recognized Indigenous tribes to operate online casino games. Interestingly, Whitmer was reluctant to sign the act, claiming that online slots would negatively affect Michigan’s iLottery, which had been operating since 2014.

The first online casinos weren’t launched until 2021, as it took over a year to finalize state regulations. On January 22, eight online casinos launched, alongside sportsbooks and online poker sites. The number of online casinos in operation has since grown to 15 in 2025.

Michigan now allows most major forms of online gambling, including slots, table games, video poker, bingo, and sports betting. Some forms of fantasy drafts are allowed at sites like FanDuel and DraftKings. However, in 2023, the state introduced legislation to ban the Pick’Em style of DFS (daily fantasy sports) games.

The industry has been constantly evolving since online gambling launched in Michigan. Most recently, BetMGM announced that it would allow Michigan players to combine betting pools with players from New Jersey. This interstate play will increase the player size and jackpot of betting pools and could set the stage for even more innovation in the future.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board is responsible for regulating all land-based and online gambling in the state. Their website states that the MGCB “shall ensure the conduct of fair and honest gaming to protect the interests of the citizens of the state of Michigan.”

Michigan's online casino revenue surged 24% year-over-year in January 2025, reaching $248 million. This marked the fourth consecutive month of growth, outperforming New Jersey’s $221 million and trailing only Pennsylvania’s $268 million. Unlike NJ and PA, Michigan also saw a 1.7% month-over-month increase from December.
